IPL 2023: Who will be the next captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad? Three Contenders for the Post

The South Africa all-rounder also says that MS Dhoni, Kane Williamson and Faf du Plessis are his biggest inspiration as captains and says he learnt to stay calm and composed from them.

The Sunrisers Hyderabad are in search of a captain for the upcoming editions of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

After ousting their long-serving captain Kane Williamson in the auction, the Hyderabad franchise have lost a seasoned leader in their team. And that means they need someone who can take up the leadership duties from now on.

At the moment, the player who seems to be leading the race is Aiden Markram. The South African has led the Sunrisers Easter Cape to the final of the SA20 with some outstanding performances. Markram, who led South Africa in the 2014 U-19 World Cup, hasn't really been able to lead a senior side until this recent SA20, where he has showcased his leadership skills with distinction.

And the 28-year-old may well be rewarded with a bigger duty, which is captaining the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL 2023.

"It would be nice if I get to lead SRH, but that's not the end of the world for me," Markram said to TOI in South Africa.

The South Africa all-rounder also says that MS Dhoni, Kane Williamson and Faf du Plessis are his biggest inspiration as captains and says he learnt to stay calm and composed from them.

Apart from Markram, Mayank Agarwal and Bhuvneshwar Kumar are also in contention to be the next captain for SRH. Mayank has prior captaincy experience with Punjab Kings in the IPL, while Bhuvneshwar has done the same occasionally at Sunrisers themselves.

Mayank, being a dashing batter up top and having prior captaincy experience can be a good option for SRH. Bhuvneshwar, on the other hand, has a host of experience in the IPL and can be a move the SRH management can think of. The former also leads Karnataka in the domestic tournaments, making him a much wiser choice compared to Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

SRH do have a decent squad going into the IPL this year, and would be aiming to end their six-year-long trophy drought. They last won the IPL in 2016. The Hyderabad-based franchise also won the IPL in 2009 but it was known as Deccan Chargers back at that time.
