IPL 2024 Auction: Why Delhi Capitals Are Favourites To Land Travis Head?

One big name that is likely to gain a lot of interest in the IPL 2024 auction on December 19 is Australia's World Cup-winning star batter Travis Head, who is expected to be among the most expensive buys this season.

The opening batter has been in rich-vein of form this year, scoring 1568 runs in 36 innings across formats. The 29-year-old played the title-clinching knock earlier this month to help Australia beat favourites India in the ICC World Cup 2023 final.

Travis Head destined to reunite with David Warner in IPL 2024?

Following his good run of performances with the bat and his ability to roll the arm over for a few spells with the ball, make him a good fit for the T20 or any format of the game for that matter.

The IPL Auction players list is yet to be revealed, but a total of 509 players have reportedly been shortlisted in the preliminary list that will be trimmed down soon. Head along with New Zealand's Rachin Ravindra are expected to bag huge sums during the auction.

Why Delhi Capitals stand above the rest in terms of landing Travis Head in IPL 2024 auction?

Every team will be interested to land the services of a player like Head, but not everyone has all the boxes ticked for a deal which is likely to break the bank and exceed the purse limit of several teams.

Although not set in stone, the one team that has all the boxes ticked like the overseas slot and a reasonable purse if not the biggest going into the auction, is Delhi Capitals, who let go four overseas players and hold a budget of Rs 28.95 crore.

Apart from that, DC will be keen to address the opening slot issue afrer Prithvi Shaw and David Warner partnership failed to click in the last two seasons. Ricky Ponting, the head coach, will be tempted to reunite the Australian opening pair.

This could be done by playing Mitchell Marsh as an opener alongside Warner, but if they get a chance to land someone like Head, they will definitely go the distance.

The two major issues for DC in making this deal happen is, one they need to fill at least three more slots, and the second is when Head's name will be drawn in the auction. But, their retention strategy points to DC going all in for Head.

Every other team also will have an eye on this deal. Five other teams can realistically beat DC to land Head, but all the five have a few conditions they will need to address first.

CSK has the purse of Rs 31.4 Crore, but it is unlikely that they will disrupt the partnership of Devon Conway and Ruturaj Gaikwad in the opening slot.

Plus, their overseas slots for the 11 also seem to be sorted with Moeen Ali, Matheesha Pathirana and Maheesh Theekshana better suited to the home conditions.

Kolkata Knight Riders also have a purse of Rs 32.7 crore, but they already have two overseas openers in Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Jason Roy. Plus, they need to address the fast bowling area before taking a chance at players like Head.

Punjab Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad's purses also exceed Rs 30 crore, but both franchises have almost filled their overseas slots and need to use the funds to add Indian players.

Gujarat Titans is likely to be the only challenger to Delhi Capitals for Head as the 2022 champions have lost their captain and will want to make a statement signing in the auction. Head fits their requirement for an opening partner for Shubman Gill.

But they too seem to have sorted their four overseas slots in the playing 11 with David Miller, Kane Williamson and Rashid Khan being the three first choice picks, and Josh Little, Noor Ahmad and another fast bowling option likely to take the fourth spot.

So, this makes DC's path clear for the purchase of Head, but all will depend on when the Australian opener, who previously had a stint with Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2016 and 2017 season, come out in the auction.

In his previous appearance in the IPL, Head had just then made his international debut and added just 205 runs including a fifty in his 10 innings with RCB across two seasons. But since then he has either gone unsold or not been part of the IPL auction.
