Bengaluru, May 16: The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are not just a cricket team; they are a dynasty, with Mahendra Singh Dhoni standing as a colossal figure in its history.
However, as the IPL 2024 season unfolds, the narrative surrounding Dhoni has taken an unexpected turn. Amid speculation and surprise, CSK's batting coach Michael Hussey has expressed his hope that the iconic captain will extend his journey with the team for a few more years.

Dhoni's decision to step aside from captaincy just before the commencement of the 2024 season left many bewildered. Ruturaj Gaikwad was entrusted with the responsibility of leading the side, marking a significant shift in the team dynamics. Nonetheless, Hussey remains steadfast in his belief that Dhoni's prowess with the bat and his invaluable experience still hold immense value for CSK.
Speaking on ESPN's Around the Wicket show, Hussey acknowledged Dhoni's enduring batting prowess and meticulous preparation, emphasising the need to manage his workload due to past knee surgery. Despite batting lower in the order this season, Dhoni's ability to make an impact from the get-go remains unparalleled, a testament to his exceptional skill and temperament.
"We are hoping he does keep going. He is still batting so well. He does prepare well - he gets into the camp very early and hits a lot of balls. He has been in good touch all season really," Hussey said.
Hussey - who has played under Dhoni at the CSK before retiring - said, "I guess we just got to try to manage him from the body side of things. He had a knee surgery after the last season. So, he has been managing that from the initial stage of the tournament.
"I hope he keeps going for another couple of years. But we will just have to wait and see. He is the only one who will make that call. And, he likes to sort of build the drama a little bit as well. So, I wouldn't expect a decision anytime soon."
Hussey's optimism extended beyond Dhoni's on-field contributions. He revealed Dhoni's desire to support Gaikwad in his transition to captaincy, illustrating a seamless passing of the torch from one leader to another.
Gaikwad's calm demeanor and promising leadership have impressed Hussey, with CSK currently occupying a respectable position on the points table under his stewardship.
The Aussie added, "MS sort of announced that he was not going to be attending the pre-tournament captains' meeting. And we're like, 'Oh, no. What's going on?'. He said Ruturaj was going to be captain from then on.
"So, it was a little bit of a shock to start with, but it has been managed really well. We have sort of known for a little while that he was the right man to take over the job when MS decided to step aside. "He wanted to still be here while the new captain took over, to try to help him along the way and sort of mentor him a little bit."
The Australian coach's words reflect a deep respect for Dhoni's legacy and a hopeful anticipation of his continued association with CSK. While Dhoni's future remains uncertain, his influence on the team transcends his role on the field. As CSK navigates through this period of transition, Dhoni's presence, whether in the dressing room or on the pitch, serves as a guiding light for the franchise and its players.
