Many IPL teams have faced the challenge of letting go of players who later shone brighter with other franchises. Examples abound, from Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) regretting the loss of players like Chris Gayle and Shubman Gill, to Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) missing out on talents like KL Rahul and Shane Watson. Similarly, Mumbai Indians (MI) and Delhi Capitals (DC) have seen players like Dwayne Bravo and Andre Russell achieve significant success elsewhere.

CSK and their Retention Policy

However, CSK stands out for having very few instances where players have left and found greater success elsewhere. Ravichandran Ashwin and Wriddhiman Saha are notable exceptions, but these were largely due to unavoidable circumstances rather than oversight. CSK's inability to retain Ashwin was a matter of financial constraints, while Saha's lack of a regular spot was due to the presence of MS Dhoni, a legend of the game and an integral part of CSK.

The lesson from CSK's strategy is clear: finding new talent is crucial, but recognizing and retaining the talent you already have is equally, if not more, important. After years of poor outings with Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Dube has been rollicking things at his new franchise since last year. Mustafizur Rahman has also found his feet in the IPL at CSK this year. Ajinkya Rahane's revival last season was one of the most epic fairytales of IPL history.

In each of these cases, MS Dhoni has played a huge part. The former India captain perhaps has the best cricketing brain and he has fuelled the minds of the players with a customized approach, which has in turn galvanized them.

There is no doubt that the youth's exuberance has played a part, but even the old war-horses have rolled back the years. As they continue their campaign in IPL 2024, CSK's blend of experience and emerging talent makes them a formidable opponent and a favourite for the title once again. As they progress through IPL 2024, their approach to retaining key players and nurturing talent will continue to be a significant factor in their performance.
