IPL 2024: CSK Suffer Big Injury Blow; Injured Matheesha Pathirana To Return To Sri Lanka

By MyKhel Staff

Chennai Super Kings' hopes for a robust end to their IPL 2024 campaign have been dealt a significant setback, with key fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana set to return to Sri Lanka due to a hamstring injury. Also read: Most Runs in IPL 2024 | Most Wickets | Most Sixes | IPL Points Table

The franchise confirmed this development in a recent statement, noting that Pathirana requires further treatment and recovery in his home country.

Matheesha Pathirana

Pathirana, a vital component of the CSK bowling unit, has been instrumental this season, claiming 13 wickets with an economy rate of 7.68. Known for his unique sling action reminiscent of Lasith Malinga, Pathirana has been particularly effective in the middle overs and at the death, often stalling the opposition's scoring rate and picking up crucial wickets.

This injury not only sidelines Pathirana but also compounds the problems for CSK, who are already without the services of their star bowler Deepak Chahar. Chahar sustained a serious injury earlier in the season, which has ruled him out for the remainder of the tournament. Left-hand pacer Mustafizur Rahman is also away on national duty.

In the absence of these key players, CSK has had to rely on Simarjeet Singh and Richard Gleeson to fill the void, a challenge given the consistency and experience that Pathirana and Chahar bring to the team.

Currently positioned fifth on the IPL points table, CSK's path to the playoffs is precarious. The absence of their leading pace bowlers adds to the team's challenges, making their journey tougher in the highly competitive later stages of the tournament.

The loss of Pathirana is particularly felt given his recent form and the impact he has had in tight situations. His ability to deliver precise yorkers and vary his pace has made him a tough bowler to face in the crucial final overs of the game.

His return to Sri Lanka for recovery is a prudent step to ensure his long-term availability and health, but it leaves a noticeable gap in CSK's strategy and lineup as they vie for a spot in the playoffs.

CSK's management and coaching staff will now have to rethink their tactics and possibly look into their reserve bench to find an effective replacement who can maintain the level of performance expected at this critical point in the season.
