Eden Gardens in Kolkata, established in 1864 and renovated in 2011, will host a few matches during the seventeenth edition of the Indian Premier League – IPL 2024, starting from Friday (March 22).

Eden Gardens, the oldest and second largest cricket stadium in India, has served as home venues to Bengal state teams, the Indian cricket team and since 2008, when Indian Premier League (IPL) started as a home to the Kolkata-based franchise Kolkata Knight Riders.

Called the Home of Cricket in India, Eden Gardens will play hosts to at least seven home games of two-time champions Kolkata Knight Riders in the upcoming campaign of IPL.

In the partial released schedule, KKR will host one match at home against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Saturday (March 23) with remaining matches set to take place in April and May.

Eden Gardens will be hosting it’s fourteenth season of the cash-rich league matches, having hosted several matches in IPL, the home games of KKR in 12 seasons and as a neutral host during the 2022 season.

Known to be on the slow side, assisting spinners and slower bowlers, the pitches at the Kolkata venue, saw slight transformation last season with teams scoring 200 plus.

The same continued in the season opener in 2024 as Sunrisers Hyderabad nearly pulled off the highest chase at the venue. But with the home side stacked with spin-bowling options, we could see the return of the sluggish wickets.

It’s the Indian summer, so the day will be warm and the evenings will be humid, seeing the temperatures rise up from 34°C to 36°C during the next fortnight in Kolkata with the low of 25°C to 26°C in March. But there is rain expected in the lead up to the tournament.

In April and May, there could be a few summer showers, but the temperatures are expected to rise up to 38°C in the day with the low of 26°C to 29°C in the nights.
