Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) defied the odds by sealing the final IPL 2024 playoffs spot after a 27-run victory over Souther rivals and defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Saturday (May 18) in Bengaluru.
RCB, who had registered just 1 win in the first 8 matches of the season, went on a six-match winning streak in their remaining league stage matches to create history as the first team to finish in the top four despite the poorest of starts to the season.

Starting the match against CSK with a task of winning by a margin of 18 runs or finishing the chase by 18.1 overs, RCB were put on the backfoot after they lost the toss and were invited to bat first at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
Put into bat, RCB rode on all-round batting display led by skipper Faf Du Plessis' fifty to set a target of 219 and needed to stop CSK under 200 to topple their opponents, who had 14 points with a superior net run rate (NRR).
In the run chase, CSK, who targetted 201 to qualify for playoffs rather than a win, almost reached the target, but Yash Dayal bowled brilliant final over despite conceding a six off the first ball to restrict CSK to 191.
Most cricket experts had written off RCB from reaching the playoffs after the disastrous start, but the Bengaluru-based side rode on the support from their exceptional fanbase and passion of the playing group led by Virat Kohli, did the unthinkable.
Star Sports experts Matthew Hayden, Ambati Rayudu, Tom Moody, Irfan Pathan and Mohammad Kaif had excluded RCB from their possible top four finish after the league. Following the match on Saturday (May 18), fans trolled these experts on social media.
One user posted a picture with the experts prediction, captioning the image with the sentence: "Two minutes of silence for these people," taking shot at the former cricketers for not giving RCB a chance of reaching the playoffs.
