The seventeenth season of Indian Premier League - IPL 2024 is down to two teams as Kolkata Knight Riders will lock horns with Sunrisers Hyderabad in the final at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Sunday (May 26).
Shreyas Iyer-led Kolkata Knight Riders, who finished top of the points table, defeated second-placed Sunrisers Hyderabad by 8 wickets in Qualifier 1 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Tuesday (May 21) to earn a direct entry into the summit clash.

Pat Cummins’ SRH, however, quickly bounced back to defeat Eliminator winner and third-placed Rajasthan Royals by 36 runs at the Chennai venue on Friday (May 24) to reach the final.
While the two sides prepare to clash for the title in season 17 of IPL, here is a look at their previous record and their final appearances in the Indian Premier League so far:
Sunrisers Hyderabad, who made their IPL debut in the 2012 edition after Deccan Chargers – the first Hyderabad-based franchise was terminated. SRH has won the IPL one time so far, winning the title under the captaincy of David Warner in the 2016 edition following an 8-run victory over Royal Challengers Bangalore in the final.
The Sunrisers also came close to winning their second title in 2018 edition, but lost to Chennai Super Kings in the IPL Final by 8 wickets. Now, they will aim for their second IPL crown in 2024.
Kolkata Knight Riders, who has been part of IPL since the league’s inception in 2008, is the third most successful side in the league history, having won the title in 2012 and 2014 under the captaincy of Gautam Gambhir.
In 2012 final, KKR defeated CSK in the final by 5 wickets, while they defeated Punjab Kings in the 2014 final by 3 wickets. KKR also reached the final in 2021 when they lost the final to MS Dhoni’s CSK.
With Gambhir back at the helm, KKR reached the final for the fourth time. They will now aim for their third IPL title to get a little closer to the tally of the joint record title-holders.
MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings and Rohit Sharma’s Mumbai Indians are the most successful sides in IPL history, having won the title five times each. CSK has also reached the summit clash 10 times, while MI has reached the title clash 6 times.
KKR is the next best team in IPL history, having won the title 2 times and reached the final 4 times. SRH, RR, now defunct Deccan Chargers and Gujarat Titans are the next best teams with 1 title each to their name.
RCB, PBKS, Delhi Capitals and Lucknow Super Giants are among the active team to never win the IPL trophy. While RCB has failed in three final matches, DC and PBKS have failed in their solitary final appearances. All three teams have finished runners up as best.
