The departure of Hardik Pandya from Gujarat Titans ahead of the IPL 2024 auction has been a subject of widespread discussion.
Hardik Pandya, who was playing for his home state franchise, left after a two-season stay with them and returned to his former team Mumbai Indians.

Hardik was the captain of the Titans and in his two years, led them to an IPL win and then a final appearance. Gujarat Titans announced themselves in IPL 2022 and won the tournament in their debut season.
Hence it was a shock to see Hardik leaving the franchise after such a brief stay. The move to Mumbai Indians was initially welcomed, but then Hardik's subsequent appointment as MI captain replacing Rohit Sharma has been a cause for criticism.
But was Hardik's move back to Mumbai Indians was purely an emotional deal where the player felt he had to return to his boyhood franchise? There's reportedly more to it.
It was baffling to see Titans letting go of their captain Hardik, who was a massive figure at the franchise. And now a report of The Indian Express says it was not just a mere transaction of the player salary, as there is much more in it if we dive deep.
According to the report, Gujarat Titans took a strategic decision to sell Hardik Pandya. In IPL, player's salary gets directly transferred to the buying team when a player is traded. But there is an additional transfer fee to the selling club, which remains undisclosed and only known to the IPL governing committee.
It is speculated that GT got a humongous transfer fee for Hardik Pandya from Mumbai Indians. Although the sum of the fee is not being disclosed, sources have said around Rs. 100 crore was given to the Titans by MI for the acquisition of Hardik Pandya.
Hence the deal was approved by CVC Capital, the owners of Gujarat Titans, for its sheer value. CVC is an investment firm with 40 managing partners and a global presence. It was a big coup for MI on the field, but they had to pay a hefty price for it.
