IPL 2024: Here's how Mumbai Indians fared in the tournament despite losing each of the first game since 2013

Mumbai Indians (MI) are one of the most successful teams in the history of the Indian Premier League as they decorated their trophy cabinet with five accolades. MI achieved all such prestigious honours under the tutelage of Rohit Sharma.

MI are known for their relatively slow starts in the IPL but have managed to hit the peak levels as the tournament progresses, a template that has worked pretty well for them for the last decade. It remains to be seen how they perform in the IPL 2024 season under the new captain, Hardik Pandya.

Mumbai Indians lose yet another opening game of the season

MI kick-started their IPL 2024 campaign with a narrow defeat to GT at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. This isn’t the first time that they lost their first game of the IPL season. In fact, they lost their twelfth consecutive opening game of the season.

Let’s learn how they performed in the competition despite losing each of their first game since 2013. During the IPL 2013 season, they qualified for the playoffs by finishing second on the table. Notably, they went on to beat CSK in the final to win their maiden IPL title.

In the subsequent season, MI finished fourth on the table and qualified for the playoffs but their campaign came to a close when they lost to CSK in the must-win semi-final. In the IPL 2015 season, MI finished second in the league stage points table and reached the final.

Notably, they defeated CSK in the final to win their second title. In the next season, they not only failed to defend the title but narrowly missed out on qualifying for the playoffs by finishing fifth on the points table. In IPL 2017, they topped the points table and reached the final.

They got the better of the now-defunct franchise, Rising Pune Supergiants in the final to clinch their third title. However, in the next season, they failed to defend the title and also failed to qualify for the playoffs wherein they finished just outside the top 4 (fifth on the table).

In IPL 2019, MI finished the league stage as the table-toppers and made it all the way to the finals before defeating CSK for the third time in the final to win their fourth IPL title. In the next season, they defended the title for the first time in their history to win their fifth IPL title.

They accomplished it by beating Delhi Capitals in the final. In the IPL 2021 season too, they lost their opening fixture but they narrowly missed out on qualifying for the playoffs due to NRR. KKR who had a better NRR pipped MI for the fourth spot.

In the IPL 2022 season, MI lost their opening game but endured their worst-ever campaign as they finished at the bottom of the league stage points table. They qualified for the playoffs in the IPL 2023 season by finishing fourth on the table. They also knocked Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) out of the competition in the Eliminator but their journey came to a close when they lost to Gujarat Titans (GT) in Qualifier 2.
