IPL 2024 Playoff Scenario: The ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season is entering its business end and the latest developments have added the thrill to this edition.
Kolkata Knight Riders remain on top of the IPL 2024 points table with 19 points in 13 matches and become the first team to qualify for playoffs. Rajasthan Royals are placed 2nd with 16 points in 12 matches. Sunrisers Hyderabad currently occupy the 4th spot with 14 points, as they are dethroned from the podium as CSK occupy it with 14 points with a better NRR. Delhi Capitals, Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Lucknow Super Giants - all are currently stationed with 12 points.

GT vs KKR: The match was called off due to rain and bad weather in Ahmedabad. It means KKR have qualified for playoffs as Top Two teams, while GT are eliminated from the tournament.
Mumbai Indians (MI) currently sit 9th in the table with 8 points in 13 matches and were eliminated from the IPL 2024 playoff race.
Punjab Kings are also another team who are eliminated from the tournament. This is the 10th straight season for the Punjab boys without playoffs, since they were the beaten finalists in IPL 2014.
Gujarat Titans are eliminated from the tournament. The IPL 2022 champions will not qualify for the knockouts for the first time in their three seasons.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru are still contenders for a playoff spot and are on a role at the moment with their 5th consecutive victory on Sunday. The RCB juggernaut seems to have a bit too late but they are still in the hunt, without a shadow of a doubt.
The upcoming match against Chennai Super Kings will be a shootout for both teams. RCB are currently on 12 points and if they win against CSK in Bengaluru by a sizeable margin, they will be through to the playoffs.
Kolkata Knight Riders have qualified for the playoffs and have now sealed a top-two spot as well. It means, they will be playing the Qualifier 1 on May 21 in Ahmedabad and have an extra chance to qualify for the Final.
Rajasthan Royals suffered their third consecutive defeat at the hands of Chennai Super Kings. RR still appears to be in a relatively comfortable position with 16 points from 12 games but their situation is not entirely secure.
RR (+0.349) have an inferior NRR than CSK (+0.528) and SRH (+0.406) - hence if they lose their next two matches and CSK win their final match and SRH win at least one of their final two matches, the Rajasthan Royals can be knocked out of the top two places.
If Delhi Capitals also win their next two matches by big margins and the Royals get beaten handsomely, Sanju Samson's team can even be eliminated from the tournament.
Chennai Super Kings have 14 points in 13 matches. The victory against Rajasthan Royals is a massive boost for them.
CSK's final match is against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and if they win the match, they will qualify for the playoffs. Even if they lose the match, CSK can get to the next stage if -
CSK can also occupy the 2nd spot in the table, but in that case they will have to win against RCB, and hope that both Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad will lose their next two matches.
Lucknow Super Giants have 12 points in 12 matches. The defeat against SRH means their playoff hopes are in jeopardy. KL Rahul and his team will have to win their next two matches and will need either CSK or SRH to slip to have a chance for qualification.
If Lucknow Super Giants beat Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians, and Sunrisers Hyderabad or Chennai Super Kings lose their two matches, then KL Rahul and his team will be through to the playoffs.
Sunrisers Hyderabad have 14 points in 12 matches and the win over LSG has taken them to the 3rd spot in the table. They have also boosted the NRR with the victory.
SRH's next match against Gujarat Titans is of paramount importance and a win can almost stamp their qualification assurance, especially after Chennai's defeat at the hands of Gujarat Titans.
With 12 points in 13 matches, Delhi Capitals are still in the hunt, but their NRR is the issue. Delhi's Net Run Rate is considerably inferior compared to CSK and RCB, which means even if they win their final match against Lucknow Super Giants, they are likely to fall prey to the NRR.
