Jasprit Bumrah's chance of winning first-ever Indian Premier League Purple Cap ended after Mumbai Indians rested the pace spearhead for the final league phase match in IPL 2024 against Lucknow Super Giants on Friday (May 17) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
Bumrah, who was second in the race for most wickets this season with 20 wickets, sat out the final game of the campaign with Arjun Tendulkar replacing the senior pacer in the playing 11.

With the season all but over, and T20 World Cup 2024 just a few weeks away, Mumbai Indians gave the country's current best bowler a much-needed break going into the show-piece tournament.
But this has cost him the chance of winning an elusive IPL Purple Cap, which will probably see one of the former winners fight it out in the remaining 7 matches, including the 4 playoff matches. There could be a new winner also in-store. Here is a look at the Purple Cap Leaderboard:
Some of the players in the current top 10 will take no further part in the ongoing season with their league matches all over. The Delhi Capitals bowlers season is finished. So, the likes of Kuldeep Yadav, Khaleel Ahmed, Mukesh Kumar and Bumrah can add more wickets to their tally.
Punjab Kings' Harshal Patel currently leads the race with 22 wickets in 13 matches and could play in one more match and extend his lead, while the likes of Yuzvendra Chahal, Varun Chakravarthy and Harshit Rana can catch up on the leader as they are likely to play in more matches.
With Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals heading into the playoffs, it could be a direct fight for the most wickets in 2024 between Chakravarthy and Chahal if Harshal fails to add more to his 22-wicket tally in his final match on Sunday (May 19).
If Chennai Super Kings also qualify, then Tushar Deshpande and KKR's Harshit Rana could also be challenging for the top spot with several other players of playoff-qualified teams also in the top 20 wicket-takers list for the season.
