Chennai, May 24, 2024: Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson made a costly mistake in the critical Qualifier 2 against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Friday (May 24).
Chasing a target of 176 after their bowlers restricted SRH to 175/9 in 20 overs, Rajasthan Royals had a decent start, reaching 56 for the loss of one wicket in six overs. Also read: Most Runs in IPL 2024 | Most Wickets | Most Sixes | IPL 2024 Points Table

Yashasvi Jaiswal and Samson revived the innings after opener Tom Kohler-Cadmore was dismissed for 10 off 16 balls at the end of the third over. However, the game took a turn when Jaiswal, who scored 42 off 21 balls, was dismissed by Shahbaz Ahmed on the fifth ball of the eighth over while attempting a big shot.
This left Samson with the responsibility to anchor the innings and lead his team to victory. Unfortunately, Samson failed to deliver, throwing his wicket away just four balls after Jaiswal's departure.
SRH captain Pat Cummins brought part-timer Abhishek Sharma into the attack in the ninth over, and Samson gave a simple catch to Aiden Markram at long-on, departing for 10 off 11 balls.
This left Rajasthan Royals in trouble at 67-3 in 8.3 overs. Samson's shot was poorly executed, as he failed to place it wide of the fielder. Markram, known for his safe hands, took the catch with ease, sending Samson back to the dugout with his head down.
In IPL 2024, Samson had scored 181 runs off 130 balls against spinners, being dismissed only twice. However, the slow pitch likely influenced Cummins' decision for the bowling change, which proved successful.
Samson's performance in playoffs has been disappointing, with only two scores above 30 in nine playoff innings since 2013. The right-handed batter has scored 166 runs in playoffs.
RR batting crumbled under pressure in the big match as they could only score 139/7 in the allotted 20 overs and lost the match by 36 runs to be knocked out of the competition. The Kerala wicketkeeper-batter faced criticism on social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) for his failure to perform in such a crucial match.
Users on X slammed Samson for getting dismissed by a part-time bowler, Abhishek Sharma.
Another user lauded SRH captain Pat Cummins for his shrewd tactic of introducing Abhishek Sharma and dismissing Samson.
Veteran journalist Boria Majumdar also criticised Samson for throwing wickets in back-to-back important games for his team and letting the opportunities slip away from his hands.
Another user poked fun at Samson for not making the opportunities count and indirectly trolled his fans for making excuses every time the cricketer fails to perform.
Another Twitter user slammed Samson and claimed the Kerala cricketer seems to have sworn an oath to choke when it matters the most.
