Former India player Wasim Jaffer says the upcoming IPL edition must undertake a change for the betterment of Indian cricket.
The IPL 2023 edition saw the introduction of a new rule, which was introduced ahead of the tournament.

The rule of Impact Player is a de-novo introduction which has changed the strategizing and dynamics of the game completely. It allows one substitution per team per match where a batter or bowler can be replaced as per the team's requirements. The incoming player can also take part in bowling and batting.
Apart from IPL, the impact player rule has been implemented in India's domestic circuit as well, as we have seen in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament.
But is the Impact Player Rule blunting the Indian cricket in greater scape? Former India player Wasim Jaffer thinks so.
Jaffer believes the introduction of the impact player rule makes an Indian all-rounder bowl less, which is causing problems for Indian cricket. He says Impact Player has been curbing the number of overs and Indian all-rounder is bowling as their focus is shifted on batting.
And Jaffer says IPL should take away this rule from the upcoming edition in IPL 2024.
"I think IPL needs to take away the impact player rule, as it's not encouraging the all rounders to bowl much and lack of ARs and batters not bowling is a major area of concern for Indian cricket. Thoughts?," Jaffer posted on X.
Fans have backed him up with his thoughts and thinks the same. Indian fans believe the Impact Player rule is causing no benefit to Indian cricket and credited Jaffer for 'nailing' and addressing the issue properly.
"Finally someone nailed it. We are constantly struggling to find the jack of all trade players because ipl impact rule is simply killing Allrounders & affecting us in ICC events where for example Aus had the luxury of bowling Maxwell and Head in the finals. Though we too made them look like Warnesque We talk about depth in bench strength in batsmen and bowlers but allrounders we face drought. It's the same HP, Jadeja, Axar," a fan commented.
There have been concerns about ICC also adopting the Impact Player rule in the upcoming T20 tournaments. The T20 World Cup 2024 is going to be held in the West Indies and USA in June.
