IPL 2024: Star Sports Refutes Allegations of Airing Rohit Sharma's Private Conversation

By MyKhel Staff

IPL broadcaster Star Sports firmly denied allegations of airing any private audio conversation involving Indian captain Rohit Sharma. This denial followed Sharma's public accusation on Twitter that the channel had breached his privacy despite his repeated requests to halt the recording.

The controversy began on May 11 when a video, shared by the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and featuring Rohit Sharma and KKR assistant coach Abhishek Nayar, went viral.

In this video, Sharma appeared to be discussing his future with the Mumbai Indians. The video was swiftly removed from KKR's social media platforms, but the incident had already sparked significant attention.

Further complications arose on May 16, ahead of the Mumbai Indians' match against the Lucknow Super Giants. Sharma, while engaged in a conversation with teammate Dhawal Kulkarni at the Wankhede Stadium, noticed cameras were again directed at him. He explicitly requested the broadcaster to turn off the audio.

On Sunday, Rohit Sharma publicly accused Star Sports of airing a private conversation, prompting the broadcaster to issue a rebuttal.

In a statement, Star Sports clarified, "The clip, taken during a training session on May 16 at Wankhede stadium, for which Star Sports had authorised access, momentarily showed the senior player in conversation with his friends on the sidelines. No audio from this conversation was either recorded or broadcast."

The channel emphasized that the footage in question only included Sharma's request for his conversation's audio to be turned off and lacked any broader editorial relevance. This segment, they claimed, was part of the live coverage of pre-match preparations and was not intended to breach privacy.

Rohit Sharma earlier highlighted the potential dangers of prioritising exclusive content over privacy. He remarked, "The need to get exclusive content and focused only on views and engagement will one day break the trust between the fans, cricketers and cricket. Let better sense prevail."

Star Sports reiterated its commitment to safeguarding players' privacy while maintaining comprehensive coverage for fans. "Respect for players' privacy while bringing fans, moments of intense action and preparations, sits at the core of this ethos, which the broadcaster remains committed to," stated the channel.
