IPL 2024: Stars in Spotlight - Five Players to Watch Out in the Playoffs

By MyKhel Staff

The 2024 Indian Premier League season will be remembered for its power hitting and age-defying moments. This run-frenzied season wasn't without its drama - a nail-biting encounter saw a team chase down a seemingly insurmountable 250+ target.

But amidst the fireworks, veterans like MS Dhoni continue to prove age is just a number, while youngsters have emerged as blazing comets.

The bowlers have been treated like bowling machines as the 200-run mark has become a mere checkpoint. One team, in a rampage of power hitting, has rewritten the record books, twice, culminating in a jaw-dropping new high of 287.

Now, with playoffs looming, individual brilliance will be the ultimate game-changer, deciding the fate of each franchise's championship dreams. Here are the top five players in focus in the IPL 2024 as we reach the business end of the campaign.

Daryl Mitchell (CSK)

Following a triumphant World Cup held in India, all eyes were on Daryl Mitchell, expected to draw substantial interest from teams seeking to fortify their all-round capabilities.

In a strategic move, the Chennai Super Kings swooped in to secure the services of the versatile medium-pace all-rounder, perfectly tailored to excel in the unique conditions of the M. Chidambaram Stadium. The acquisition came at a notable price, with CSK sealing the deal for a hefty sum of INR 14 crores.

While the burden of justifying such a significant investment often weighs heavily on players, Daryl has seamlessly integrated into the CSK setup, proving himself invaluable to the team's ongoing campaign.

His contributions with the bat have been particularly noteworthy, amassing an impressive tally of 314 runs at a commendable strike rate of 144.70. Among his notable achievements are two well-deserved half-centuries, further solidifying his status as a vital cog in the CSK batting lineup. Despite limited opportunities to showcase his bowling prowess, Daryl has seized the moment to clinch a solitary wicket.

Abhishek Sharma (SRH)

Abhishek Sharma has scored the second most number of runs for SRH in IPL 2024
When India's squad for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 was unveiled, fans were left disheartened by the absence of several players they had hoped to see, among them, the notable omission of Abhishek Sharma.

The prodigious left-handed batsman, groomed under the tutelage of legends like Yuvraj Singh and Brian Lara, has been making waves in the glamorous arena of the league.

Employing Sunrisers Hyderabad's dynamic approach to the tournament, Abhishek has translated it into personal success. He has amassed 401 runs, marking his second instance of crossing the 400-run milestone in IPL history, all achieved at a scintillating strike rate of 205.64.

Throughout the season, he has notched up two half-centuries, boasting an impressive average of 36.45. Particularly renowned for his ability to clear the ropes, Abhishek has dominated the season with an astounding tally of 35 sixes, topping the charts in this regard.

Sanju Samson (RR)

Sanju Samson, often considered one of the most underrated players and skippers in the Indian Premier League in recent years, has emerged as the talk of the town in the ongoing season due to his stellar batting performances and adept leadership skills.

Despite encountering a slight dip in form recently, Samson has managed to etch his name in IPL history by securing his eighth season with over 300 runs with the bat.
Accumulating a commendable total of 504 runs in just 13 innings, including five half-centuries, he has been a consistent force throughout the campaign.

Notably, this season marked a significant milestone for Samson as he achieved his first-ever 500+ runs season in his illustrious 11-year IPL career. Anchoring the innings with finesse, he has maintained an impressive strike rate of 156.62.

Such consistent and impactful performances have not gone unnoticed, with the BCCI acknowledging Samson's prowess by selecting him as the second wicket-keeper option for the upcoming World Cup.

Rajat Patidar (RCB)

Rajat Patidar has played a pivotal role in RCB's resurgence in IPL 2024
Rajat Patidar heralded as one of the most promising batsmen in the making, had endured a dismal international stint before the IPL campaign. To compound matters, he suffered a lacklustre start to the season.

However, a pivotal moment came in a match against the Mumbai Indians, where he showcased his prowess with a swashbuckling half-century, despite his team's defeat. Since that encounter, Rajat Patidar has been in scintillating form, consistently notching up quick half-centuries.

In the ongoing campaign, he has already amassed 320 runs from 13 games, trailing just 13 runs behind his personal best IPL season in 2022, where he amassed 333 runs. Sporting a strike rate of 179.78, he has notched up five half-centuries in this campaign alone. Rajat's ability to dismantle spin bowling has been particularly noteworthy.

Bowlers of the calibre of Rahul Chahar and Kuldeep Yadav have found themselves at the receiving end of his onslaught during the middle overs. As RCB vies for success in the remainder of the season, Rajat Patidar undoubtedly stands as a linchpin in their batting lineup.

Sunil Narine (KKR)

Sunil Narine has found his mojo in the ongoing campaign of the Indian Premier League. After struggling for three successive years in the league with both bat and ball, the introduction of Gautam Gambhir as a coach has worked wonders for the side. The former Caribbean international has contributed with both bat and ball, topping the Most Valuable Player charts in the league.

Sunil Narine

In the ongoing campaign, Sunil Narine has amassed 461 runs, a feat the player hadn't even achieved during his prime hitting era. These runs have come in just 13 innings with at least two games to go; one can expect the player to touch his first-ever 500-run campaign. In the current season, he has a century and three half-centuries to his name. The runs have come at lightning speed with a strike rate of 185.92.

With the ball, he has provided important breakthroughs for his side throughout the campaign. Whether it be bowling just after the powerplay or in the late middle overs, the off-spinner has mastered the art. He has picked 15 wickets at an economy of 6.64 in a season where the bowlers have conceded runs left, right, and centre.
