IPL 2024: Virat Kohli Fined 50 Percent of Match Fee For Angry Reaction to Umpire's Call in KKR vs RCB

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) batter Virat Kohli was on Monday (April 22) fined 50 per cent of his match fee for breaching the Indian Premier League (IPL) Code of Conduct during the IPL 2024 clash against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Eden Gardens on Sunday (April 21).

Kohli was seen remonstrating on the field after he was dismissed in the third over of the run chase by a full toss, which looked like a beamer on first viewing, from KKR bowler Harshit Rana.

After being adjudged out by the onfield umpire, Virat referred the decision to the third umpire, who on going over the replays with the help of the waist height data, upheld the onfield decision which was out.

According to Hawk-Eye tracking, Kohli's waist height is 1.04 meter when standing upright at the crease. And tracking suggested that ball would have arrived at 0.92 meter if he was standing inside the crease. So, the decision was upheld.

Furious at being adjudged out, Virat was seen further protesting his case on the field and walked off in anger as the Knights rejoiced. Displeased with the decision, Kohli was seen discussing about the height of the delivery in the dugout.

While RCB eventually went on to lose the match by 1 runs, Kohli's reaction has also cost him 50 percent of the match fee as announced by the IPL on Monday (April 22).

"Virat Kohli, Batter, Royal Challengers Bengaluru has been fined 50 per cent of his match fees for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during Match 36 of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 against Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata on April 21, 2024," IPL stated in a statement.

It added that Kohli committed a level one offence under Article 2.8 of the IPL's Code of Conduct. The statement further added that the 35-year-old admitted to the offence.

"Kohli committed a Level 1 offence under Article 2.8 of the IPL's Code of Conduct. He admitted to the offence and accepted the Match Referee's sanction. For Level 1 breaches of the Code of Conduct, the Match Referee's decision is final and binding," the IPL statement further read.

Following the match, RCB skipper Faf Du Plessis acknowledged the rules, but was in agreement with Kohli that the ball was higher than the waist on initial viewing.

"It was crazy, rules are rules," Du Plessis told the broadcasters after the match. "Virat and myself thought that the ball was higher than the waist. I guess they measured it from the popping crease, one team thinks it's high, the other doesn't. That's how the game goes at times."
