Five-time champions Mumbai Indians (MI) on Tuesday (April 30) were handed their seventh loss of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 following a 4-wicket loss to Lucknow Super Giants in match 48 at the BRSABV Ekana Stadium in Lucknow.
Put into bat first, MI suffered yet another collapse in powerplay, losing four wickets with just 28 runs on the board in the first six overs until Nehal Wadhera (46 off 41) and Ishan Kishan (32 off 36) along with Tim David (35* off 18) cameo took them to 144/7.

In response, Marcus Stoinis (62 off 45) played a crucial knock, sharing stands with KL Rahul (28 off 22) and Nicholas Pooran (14 off 14), who eventually saw LSG home in the final over in the low-scoring thriller.
With that result, LSG jumped to third in the IPL 2024 points table with 12 points, while Mumbai Indians remained in ninth with 6 points from 10 matches and only retained their position due to their slightly better net run rate (NRR) compared to bottom-placed Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
MI suffered a big dent in their playoff qualification hopes following their seventh defeat of the season. However, there is still time for the five-time champions to keep their top 4 hopes alive. Can they still finish in playoff positions? Here is a look at MI's Playoff chances in 2024:
With four more matches left in the league phase and only six points on the board, Mumbai Indians are still mathematically in with a chance of making the playoffs. But will need to win their remaining matches and hope other results go their way to make playoff spot a reality in the upcoming matches.
The Mumbai Indians will be playing three of the remaining league stage matches at home, but face an opponent who has already beaten them this season in SRH and LSG. They also play KKR twice over the course of the next two weeks.
Mumbai Indians' chances of reaching the playoffs is no longer in their own hands as even winning their four remaining matches will only take them to 14 points. Even winning those four is not a guarantee going by how they have performed this season.
One more defeat and they will be out of the race as 12 points will not be enough to finish in the top four with three teams already on that many points and a few one win away from 12 points. So, MI are virtually out of the playoff race as things stand along with RCB.
