Mumbai Indians continued their losing streak in the Indian Premier League (IPL) openers following a 6-run loss to Gujarat Titans in IPL 2024 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday (March 24).

There may be a change at the helm for the joint record champions, but the infamous curse of losing the campaign openers has been carried forward from Rohit Sharma's reign to start of Hardik Pandya's captaincy stint.

Mumbai Indians extended their opening game losing run to 12 after Shubman Gill's GT pulled off the unthinkable to defend 168 in their home venue. MI were at one point crusing at 107/2 in 12 overs, but once Rohit fell, the game slowed down and turned.

Needing 19 from the last over, Pandya charged right from the first ball with a six and a four, but fell the very next ball as the curst of the first-match losing streak stuck for Mumbai Indians on his captaincy debut for the Mumbai-based side.

MI, however, are known slow-starters and despite losing their opening game in every edition since 2013, they have gone on to reach playoffs in six season, and also won the title five times during that run.
