IPL 2025: Ajinkya Rahane's Ascension as KKR Captain only a Half-Circle | Opinion

In the annals of Kolkata Knight Riders, Ajinkya Rahane has etched his name with some profound giants of the game.

The short-statured yet lion-hearted Mumbaikar is the new captain for KKR in the IPL 2025 season, as it was announced nineteen days before the season.

Ajinkya Rahane

Rahane, who makes a return to KKR, had a dismal stint three years ago. The veteran spent a solitary summer at the Knights' abode and was jolted with struggle. A season which culminated poorly for KKR, Rahane was a fringe character of a feeble outfit. The former India captain faced challenges, including a hamstring injury that curtailed his participation.

Despite these setbacks, his dedication to the sport remained unwavering. A year later, Rahane joined CSK and pulled off a stellar season with the best strike rate of his career, and won the IPL as well. And now in 2025, he is not just a mere player, he is the leader.

Recognizing his experience and leadership qualities, KKR reacquired Rahane at his base price of INR 1.5 crore during the 2025 mega auction. The departure of former captain Shreyas Iyer to Punjab Kings left a leadership void, which Rahane has been aptly chosen to fill. His previous leadership experience, notably leading India to a historic Test series victory in Australia in 2020-21, underscored his capability.

KKR officially announced Rahane as their captain for the upcoming season, with Venkatesh Iyer serving as vice-captain.

Expressing his enthusiasm, Rahane stated, "It's an honour to be asked to lead KKR, which has been one of the most successful franchises in the IPL. I think we have an excellent and balanced squad. I look forward to working with everyone and taking up the challenge of defending our title."

KKR's CEO, Venky Mysore, echoed this sentiment, highlighting Rahane's experience and maturity as pivotal for the team's title defense. The upcoming season is set to commence on March 22, with KKR hosting the Royal Challengers Bangalore at Eden Gardens.

Rahane may feel a strange tingling sensation within after the confirmation. The Indian star has experienced the zenith and nadir of cricket, but it is another opportunity to flex his muscles and showcase his might. His KKR journey is emblematic of a half-circle as he knows the circle is not complete.

Rahane may have found the throne but the time shall depict if he is the undisputed king at the galaxy of the Knights.
