In a thrilling start to their IPL 2025 campaign, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) put up a strong batting display against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the iconic Eden Gardens on Saturday, 22nd March.
Skipper Ajinkya Rahane led from the front, marking his captaincy debut for KKR with a stylish half-century that set the tone for an aggressive batting performance.

KKR's innings started on a shaky note as Quinton de Kock fell early, courtesy of a sharp delivery from RCB's Mohammed Siraj. However, the setback did little to dent KKR's confidence, with Rahane and Sunil Narine launching a counter-attack. The duo took on the RCB bowlers, capitalizing on the powerplay overs.
Rahane showcased his elegant strokeplay, driving through covers and pulling with precision. On the other end, Narine displayed his trademark aggressive intent, smashing boundaries with flair. The partnership flourished, taking KKR past the 100-run mark within 10 overs.
Leading by example, Rahane reached his half-century in just 34 balls. His calm presence and calculated risks provided the stability KKR needed. Despite the mounting pressure, he rotated the strike effectively, allowing Narine to play his natural game.
RCB made a spirited comeback with Rasikh Salam and Krunal Pandya picking up crucial wickets. Narine's explosive knock ended, but not before he struck a flurry of boundaries. Rahane, too, eventually fell while attempting to accelerate further.
Rahane was part of the KKR team in 2022 as well. But he managed to play only 7 games, scoring just 133 runs at an average of 19.
At the time of writing this article, Kolkata Knight Riders are now at 151/6 after 16 overs of play with Ramandeep Singh and Angkrish Raghuvanshi at the crease for the defending champions. The likes of Rinku Singh and Andre Russell failed to live up to the expectations.
The kind of run-rate the home-side is in now, one can expect a 200+ total.
