Ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction, BCCI and IPL Governing Council announced a list of new rules and regulations on player retention policy and availability of overseas players throughout the season.

On Saturday, September 28, the IPL Governing Council introduced new player retention limits by convening a meeting held in Bengaluru. Along with increasing the purse value for each franchise to INR 120 Cr and increasing the retention limit to six players they also imposed some strict mandates on overseas players for a more streamlined player availability throughout the season. The Right to Match cards have also been reintroduced for the IPL 2025 Auction.

IPL 2025 Auction: What Are The New Rules For The Overseas Players?

Among the declared decisions taken by the IPL Governing Council, they clarify their stance on the overseas players.

Registration has become mandatory for overseas players before each mega auction. Failing to do this would make the player ineligible for the following year’s player auction.

The other mandate is that if a registered player is picked up by any franchise in the auction and the player makes himself unavailable before the start of the season, it will lead to the banishment of the player from participating in the tournament and player auction for two seasons.

In recent years, there have been many instances where many overseas players made themselves unavailable for the season, citing trivial personal reasons before the start of the tournament, resulting in the franchises’ strategy and game plan in disarray and failing the whole purpose of the planned auction. Now, with the warning of harsh repercussions, players will be obliged to follow the BCCI guidelines for IPL and it will be easier for the franchises to muster a more strategised gameplan.
