IPL 2025 Auction: Dale Steyn Predicts Compatriot Marco Jansen Will Land Big Bucks at IPL Mega Auction

By MyKhel Staff

Former South African speedster Dale Steyn has predicted compatriot Marco Jansen will go for big money at the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) Mega Auction following his display in the ongoing T20I series against India.

Jansen, who made his IPL debut in 2021 with Mumbai Indians, was roped in by Sunrisers Hyderabad for Rs 4.20 Crore in the IPL 2022 Mega Auction. But the left-arm pace-bowling all-rounder was released by the franchise after falling down the pecking order last season.

SRH retained skipper Pat Cummins, Heinrich Klaasen, Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma and Nitish Kumar Reddy, leaving room for one uncapped player via Right to Match (RTM) at the big auction. SRH would have retained Jansen, but had no room, having made 5 capped retentions.

Now, the lanky all-rounder is peaking at the right time and could be in for a huge pay-day at the IPL Mega Auction as teams will be in search of a bowler, who can bat in the closing stages of the game.

That's exactly what Jansen managed to do in the recent 200 plus run-chase against India at the SuperSport Park in Centurion on Wednesday (November 13) when he scored 17-ball 54 in South Africa's narrow loss.

The left-am quick delivered with the ball first, finishing with figures of 1 for 28 in his fours over when his teammates went for plenty, and followed that up with a swift-paced knock that included 5 sixes and 4 fours.

Jansen has had the number on Sanju Samson in the last 2 T20Is, removing the Indian opener clean bowled for back-to-back ducks after the right-hander's century in the first T20I.

In the 1st T20I, Jansen claimed a wicket and only conceded 24 in his four overs when the rest of the Protea bowling attack gave away runs at ease. In the 2nd T20I, the lanky pacer finished with figures of 1 for 25 in four overs, including a maiden.

All these performances with the ball completmented by his fifty which showcased his ability with the bat, forced Steyn to make a bold prediction around the price for his compatriot at the IPL Auction 2025.

"Marco Jansen, A 10 crore player? I'd say so," Steyn tweeted on his official X handle after Jansen almost won the match for South Africa from a losing stage. The all-rounder took South Africa from 167/6 in 17.4 overs to 202/7 before being dismissed with 3 balls to spare.

Jansen, who has listed himself in the all-rounders category, has set his base price at INR 1.25 Crore for the upcoming two-day auction, which is set to be held on November 24 and 25 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

In the IPL, Jansen has previously played for Mumbai Indians (MI) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), taking 20 wickets in 21 matches. However, in IPL 2024, he featured in just three games for SRH, claiming only one wicket.

Given his recent form, Jansen is expected to attract substantial interest from the ten franchises in the mega auction. Teams like Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Mumbai Indians will be keen on landing a good pacer.
