With the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season coming to a close on Sunday (May 26), the attention now switches to the next season as teams will get busy planning for their retention and release list ahead of the next IPL auction.
After over two months of non-stop action, the entertaining season came to an end as Kolkata Knight Riders defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad by 8 wickets in the final at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai to clinch their third IPL title.

While KKR and SRH reached the final, Rajasthan Royals and Royal Challengers Bengaluru finished as the third and fourth-placed sides respetively on the IPL 2024 points table. Despite the higher finish, RR and RCB also will be eager to strengthen their squads for next season.
Apart from KKR, SRH, RR and RCB, the other teams - Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Capitals, Lucknow Super Giants, Punjab Kings, Gujarat Titans and Mumbai Indians will all be busy with regards to retentions and planning for the next auction, which is set to be like 2022, a mega auction.
IPL chairman Arun Dhumal confirmed that a mega auction will be held before next year's Indian Premier League - IPL 2025 during an interview with Sportstar before the start of the 2024 season. So, when will the bidding day happen and where could it happen? Here is all you need to know:
The next IPL Mega Auction is likely to be a two-day process like in 2022. In 2022, the auction took place in February, while the 2023 and 2024 auctions were held in December. So, the IPL 2025 Auction date could possibly be around the same time between December 2024 and Feburary 2025.
The last IPL Mega Auction 2022 was held in Bengaluru at a private hotel, while the 2023 and 2024 editions were held in new locations - Kerala and UAE respectively. The venue for the IPL Auction 2025 will be announced by the BCCI soon.
As per the IPL chairman Dhumal's comments, each team will have the opportunity to retain only 3 to 4 players like in the IPL 2022 mega auction, which saw a total of 204 players being sold for a whopping Rs 551 crore.
In IPL 2025 Mega Auction, we could see similar figures if the retention number is limited at maximum of 4 players per team. However, the official confirmation on the number of players allowed to be retained will come only after the stakeholders meet with BCCI in the coming days.
The windown is usually a month ahead of the next auction. So, the retention deadline could be sometime in November or January depending on when the mega auction will be held. The IPL 2025 Mega Auction date will be revealed in the coming days.
There is no information on the trade window before the next IPL, but it usually opens a month before the auction and closes for a week heading into the auction. The window usually reopens the day after the auction and run until a month before the season starts.
