IPL 2025 Auction: Jitesh Sharma, a name that once sparked excitement in Indian cricket circles, found his meteoric rise challenged during IPL 2024. After sensational performances in 2022 and 2023, his recent season for Punjab Kings (PBKS) saw a stark dip, as he managed just 187 runs in 12 innings at a strike rate of 131.69.

Despite his struggles, the wicketkeeper-batter - who plays for Vidarbha in domestic circuit - remains optimistic, using his experiences as motivation for his journey ahead, both in the IPL and on the international stage.

As the IPL 2024 season concluded, Jitesh was surprisingly released by PBKS in the lead-up to the mega auction. However, he isn't discouraged. In fact, Jitesh is eyeing new beginnings, possibly with powerhouse franchises like Mumbai Indians (MI) or Chennai Super Kings (CSK), two teams he admires deeply.

"If I don't get a chance in PBKS, then MI or CSK are good options. I like both those teams very much," he was quoted by ESPNCricinfo as saying. A fresh start with a new franchise could provide Jitesh the ideal environment to rediscover his form and make a mark.

Reflecting on IPL 2024: A Season to Reevaluate

The challenges Jitesh faced in 2024 weren't merely technical but also mental. He acknowledges that he "started thinking too far ahead" following his breakthrough in IPL 2023 and his T20I debut for India.

He explained, "I had started thinking of the [2024] T20 World Cup team." His ambitious outlook, while admirable, may have led to increased pressure and disrupted his rhythm.

Jitesh has since re-calibrated his mindset, returning to a one-match-at-a-time approach. "I know I play very high-risk cricket, and there are a lot of risks in my shot selection," he admitted. This awareness has guided him to focus on each game individually rather than the distant future.

Versatility Comes with Its Own Challenges

Throughout IPL 2024, Jitesh's batting position varied between Nos. 4, 5, 6, and even 7, a fluctuation that he believes contributed to his underwhelming season. "In T20s, the overs remaining are more important than a batsman's batting position," he noted, highlighting the strategic nuances of the shortest format. Still, he admits that having clarity in his role would provide him greater confidence.

Staying Humble and Grounded with Team India

The journey from Vidarbha's domestic circuit to the Indian team has been transformative for Jitesh. Observing senior players has inspired him to stay calm and grounded, despite his swift rise to the national squad.

"Making a place in the team is one thing, but to remain there, three things are very important: stay humble, stay grounded, and work harder than ever," he said.

His experience with the Indian team has reaffirmed his resolve. The team management's backing of players like Sanju Samson instills hope in Jitesh. The guidance from Gautam Gambhir, India's T20I coach, and captain Suryakumar Yadav has been a motivating force. "The message from Gauti sir and Surya bhai is clear. They tell us exactly what they expect from us," he explained.

The IPL Mega Auction Beckons

With PBKS opting not to retain him, Jitesh's future is open-ended. He remains pragmatic, aware that the IPL auction is unpredictable. Yet, he views MI and CSK as appealing destinations should he not return to Punjab. His affinity for captaincy and his ability to step up under pressure make him a valuable asset for any team. "I have always loved captaincy and am always ready for it," he stated, exuding confidence in his leadership abilities.

Focus on the Red-Ball Game

Despite being known as a T20 specialist, Jitesh harbors aspirations in first-class cricket. His first-class career has been sporadic, with only 18 matches to his name since his debut in 2015. He believes he could be effective if positioned strategically in the Ranji Trophy. "I am looking forward to doing well in the longer format of the game as well. I know that if I am used with good strategy, I can perform," he shared.
