IPL 2025 auction: Three teams that may target Aiden Markram at Mega Auction

Aiden Markram, who is a technically sound and versatile batsman was released by Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. He is best known for his ability to anchor the innings and accelerate when needed but couldn't quite provide the spark in the last season.

The 2016 IPL champions expected the South African to deliver the goods with the bat but he had a below-average season, scoring 220 runs in 11 games at an average of 24.44 including a fifty against Chennai Super Kings.

Besides his batting traits, he is a very good leader. For the record, he led SRH's sister franchise, Sunrisers Eastern Cape to the title in the SA20 league and even skippered Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) during the IPL. Markram's release opens up chances for other teams to bid for a proven performer. Let's take a glimpse at the three teams that could target Aiden Markram at the IPL 2025 auction.

1. Chennai Super Kings

The five-time IPL champions have a history of investing in seasoned cricketers. Aiden Markram comes loaded with leadership and batting potential. CSK always showed interest in players who are pretty good at holding the innings together and accelerating the scoreboard as the game advances.

Markram ticks the boxes in this category. Apart from his batting, he could be a handy spin option as he can chip in with his off-spin. Under Ruturaj Gaikwad's captaincy, CSK failed to qualify for the playoffs in the last season and there could be a possibility that CSK may see Markram as a future captain.

2. Lucknow Super Giants

The Lucknow-based franchise could benefit from Markram’s experience and flexibility in their middle order in the first place. He can bat anywhere in the top or middle order. Besides that, he is an occasional off-spinner, which could come in handy at times.

Aiden Markram mustered 995 runs in 44 appearances in the IPL at an average of 30.1, including five half-centuries. He boasts a pretty decent international resume, scoring 1359 runs in 56 T20Is, laced with nine fifties at a healthy strike rate of 144.3.

3. Delhi Capitals

Delhi Capitals (DC) have often struggled with consistency in their batting lineup, particularly in high-pressure situations. Despite having some talented players, they’ve frequently lacked a stabilizing presence in the middle order, a role that someone like Aiden Markram could fill perfectly.

While they have had explosive top-order batters at their disposal, they have lacked a batter who can anchor the innings while also accelerating when required and Aiden Markram brings exactly that skill set to the table. It is no secret that he can hold the innings and build partnerships after the fall of early wickets.
