IPL 2025 Auction: Venkatesh Iyer to Andre Russell - Five Players who can captain KKR next Season

By MyKhel Staff

As the IPL 2025 mega auction has concluded, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) face an intriguing decision - choosing a captain who can lead the team next season.

KKR boasts a mix of experienced players and emerging stars, but selecting the right leader is crucial for success. After retaining six players from IPL 2024, the Knights have bolstered their squad with some key buys in the auction.

Venkatesh Iyer to Andre Russell - Five Players who can captain KKR next Season

The KKR franchise has spent a total of Rs 119.95 crore on 21 players, buying 15 players in the auction across two days. The Knights spent a significant part of their Rs 51 crore auction purse to re-sign Venkatesh Iyer back into the squad, which cost them Rs 23.75 crore. A few other important inclusions have also arrived while they have bought back many of their previous players.

Captain Shreyas Iyer has moved to Punjab Kings, which means KKR will have to find a player who can lead them next season. Here are five players who can be considered as captain materials for the Knight Riders-

Venkatesh Iyer

Venkatesh Iyer has been a consistent performer with both bat and ball. Known for his fearless batting at the top and his ability to chip in with crucial overs, Iyer has grown into a dependable all-rounder. Although he lacks extensive captaincy experience, his understanding of the game and calm demeanour on the field make him a viable candidate for the leadership role.

Quinton de Kock

The South African wicketkeeper-batter brings a wealth of international experience and has already proven himself as a leader. De Kock captained South Africa in limited-overs formats and has shown an ability to inspire his team with his performances. As an opener, he leads from the front, setting the tone for the innings. His tactical acumen and familiarity with high-pressure situations make him a strong candidate for the KKR captaincy. De Kock's experience working with players from various cultures would also suit the diverse KKR setup.

Ajinkya Rahane

Ajinkya Rahane stands out as the most experienced Indian captaincy option for KKR. Having led the Indian Test team with remarkable success, including the iconic series win in Australia in 2020-21, Rahane is known for his calm, composed leadership. While his T20 batting style has often been questioned, he had a terrific season with CSK in IPL 2023. As Rahane returns to KKR yet again, it is to be seen if they consider him as a leader option.

Andre Russell

Andre Russell has been KKR's talisman for years, delivering match-winning performances with both bat and ball. While he lacks extensive captaincy experience, his ability to take charge during tense moments and inspire teammates makes him a dark horse for the leadership role. Russell's deep connection with the KKR franchise and his charismatic presence could galvanize the team. However, his injury-prone nature might be a concern for a full-time captaincy role.

Rovman Powell

The West Indies all-rounder is another strong contender, given his recent success as captain of the West Indies T20I team. Powell is known for his aggressive style of leadership and his ability to motivate players to perform at their peak. A clean striker of the ball and a capable finisher, Powell brings the Caribbean flair to the game. His international captaincy experience and clear communication skills make him a viable option to lead KKR in 2025, but it is to be seen if he can be integrated into the side.
