For the IPL 2025 season, the last IPL’s runners-up, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), have retained five key players. SRH mainly focused on keeping their batting line-up intact for the next seasons, as their batters had pulled out some extraordinary innings in the last IPL.
The retained players are Heinrich Klaasen, Pat Cummins, Abhishek Sharma, Travis Head and sole uncapped player Nitish Kumar Reddy.

Heinrich Klaasen: Rs. 23 crore
Pat Cummins: Rs. 18 crore
Travis Head: Rs. 14 crore
Abhishek Sharma: Rs. 14 crore
Nitish Kumar Reddy: Rs. 6 crore
According to the new BCCI guidelines, each franchise has a limited purse value of Rs. 120 crores. As SRH went to keeping their core batting line-up intact, they spent Rs. 75 crores, a significant portion of their budget. As a result, they will have only Rs. 45 crores in the upcoming IPL mega auction.
For most of their history, SRH remained a batting-heavy team, and in the last IPL mega auction, they followed their pattern. The Sunrisers went for the big hitters like Nicholas Pooran and Romario Shepherd. Indian fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar and allrounder Washington Sundar were another two additions.
The West Indian wicketkeeper-batsman, Nicholas Pooran was SRH’s most expensive buy, costing them a hefty amount of Rs. 10.75 crores. Washington Sundar was the second most expensive player, costing SRH Rs. 8.75 crores. Next was Indian top-order batter Rahul Tripathi (Rs. 8.5 crore).
The West Indian all-rounder Romario Shepherd was bought for Rs. 7.75 crores and was the fourth most expensive buy. The veteran pacer and former SRH main pacer, Bhuvneshwar Kumar was re-signed for Rs. 4.2 crores for his experience and expertise in the powerplay and deathovers.
However, the big hitters like Shepherd and Pooran failed to deliver the performances that justify their price tag. On the other hand, Indian talent Rahul Tripathi has been decent enough to continue for three seasons with the Sunrisers. With 413 runs he was the most consistent batter in Hyderabad’s 2022 campaign. For Washington Sundar, injuries became the main hindrance in his tenure in SRH, allowing him to play in a limited number of matches. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, after having an average 2022 season, made a comeback in 2023 and was the best bowler from the Hyderabad side.
While players like Rahul Tripathi and Bhuvneshwar Kumar had solid performances, SRH’s investment in other high-cost players like Pooran, Sundar, and Shepherd didn’t yield the expected returns.
