Delhi Capitals have announced their retention list for the upcoming IPL mega auction on Thursday (October 31), and they have retained only four players from their old squad.
The Delhi-based franchise released many big names, including their captain Rishabh Pant. The retained players are Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Tristan Stubbs and one uncapped batter Abishek Porel.

According to the new regulations by BCCI, each franchise has a limited purse of Rs 120 Cr. to build their squads. By retaining only four players, DC has allowed itself to enter the auction with a stronger purse balance.
Axar Patel: 16.50 Cr.
Kuldeep Yadav: 13.25 Cr.
Tristan Stubbs: 10 Cr.
Abishek Porel (Uncapped) 4 Cr.
The total cost of retaining these four players had cost DC Rs 47 Cr. As a result, they will have Rs. 73 Cr. to spend in the upcoming auction.
IPL 2025 Delhi Capitals: The Top Five Expensive Buys for DC in 2022 IPL Auction
In the last mega auction, DC went for a balanced approach, as they chose players from all the sectors. However, except for a few, no other players maintained the required consistency for the next seasons and failed to become very impactful for the team.
Shardul Thakur was the costliest buy for DC in the last mega auction as the all-rounder bought at a lofty price of Rs. 10.75 crore.
The second and third highest signings were two Australians, Mitchell Marsh and David Warner, both cost above Rs. 6 crores. Indian spinner Kuldeep Yadav and Bangladeshi fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman were the next two big signings and each of them cost Rs. 2 crores.
Shardul Thakur, despite having a big price tag failed to meet the expectation. He took 15 wickets in the first season and scored 120 runs in the lower order. After one season DC released him and got picked up by KKR.
Mitchell Marsh, on the other hand, played a crucial role in DC’s 2022 and 2023 IPL campaigns, despite getting injured on numerous occasions. However, in the last IPL, his performance was below par and DC released him before the auction.
The other Australian, David Warner had two massive seasons for DC, scoring 432 and 516 runs. Warner led the team in 2023 as the regular captain, Rishabh Pant, missed the season. However, in the last IPL, his form was not up to the mark, and he was released this season.
The only first bowler from the list, Mustafizur Rahman remained inconsistent for two consecutive seasons and struggled in the death overs. After the 2023 season, he was released and joined CSK for IPL 2024.
The only player from the list who got retained is the mystery spinner Kuldeep Yadav. Yadav remained the main spinner of the team for the next three seasons. He was brilliant in the first season, taking 21 wickets, and remaining crucial for the upcoming seasons.
Overall, while some of these players, like Warner and Kuldeep, proved to be valuable, others, like Shardul Thakur and Mustafizur Rahman, couldn’t consistently deliver. DC’s latter attempts to strengthen their squad in the next auctions brought mixed results, as the team continued to struggle and failed to reach the playoffs in any of these seasons.
