IPL 2025 Auction: Who Were the Five Most Expensive Buys for PBKS in IPL 2022 Mega Auction?

Punjab Kings have announced the list of the retained players for the upcoming IPL 2025 mega auction, and they have retained only two uncapped players, resulting in them having the biggest purse in the auction amongst all the franchises. However, they will need a captain and almost an entire squad for the next IPL.

Many star players like Arshdeep Singh, Liam Livingstone, Kagiso Rabada, and Jonny Bairstow have been released before the mega auction. This retention decision highlights a strategic reset after their underwhelming 2024 season, where they finished second last in the points table.

  1. Shashank Singh (Rs. 5.5 crore)
  2. Prabhsimran Singh (Rs. 4 crore)

With a gigantic purse value of Rs. 110.5 crore and four Right-to-Match (RTM) cards, PBKS will enter the IPL 2025 auction as the strongest to bid for their targeted players. They might use those RTM cards to reclaim their key talents like Sam Curran, Kagiso Rabada, and Arshdeep Singh, who could provide the required balance a core team needs.

IPL 2025 Auction: Five Biggest Buys by PBKS in IPL 2022 Mega Auction

In the history of IPL, Punjab Kings is among the few teams who have never won the IPL since the inception of the tournament in 2008. The highest achievement of the franchise is to play the final in 2014 against KKR.

However, in an attempt to change the trend, PBKS went for a similar retention strategy in 2022, which we are seeing in 2024. In 2022, PBKS retained only two players to revamp the whole squad. The only retained players were Mayank Agarwal (Rs. 12 crore) and Arshdeep Singh (Rs. 4 crore).

In the IPL 2022 mega auction, the costliest buy for Punjab was the English all-rounder, Liam Livingstone, costing them Rs. 11.5 crores. After a decent first season, injuries and inconsistency limited his appearance for PBKS.

South African fast bowler Kagiso Rabada, with a price tag of Rs. 9.25 crores, was the second-highest player and remained a pillar of the team’s bowling attack.

Indian batter Shahrukh Khan was the third highest buy for Rs. 9 crores. Inconsistent performances led to a reduced role in IPL 2023, and they finally got released before the 2024 season.

Indian star batter Shikhar Dhawan was picked up for Rs. 8.25 crore and, after having two successful seasons, suffered inconsistency in the last IPL. Punjab’s fifth-highest signing, Jonny Bairstow, after having a good first season, missed the next due to injury.

However, the big signings by Punjab Kings were good but were not enough to beat the other title contenders in this highly competitive tournament. Now, with a huge budget in hand, they will try to build a strong squad to win their first IPL.
