Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) spent a whopping Rs 23.75 crore for Venkatesh Iyer in the IPL 2025 auction, marking one of the boldest moves of the season.
The Knight Riders came into the auction with a purse of Rs 51 crore, and spent almost half of their entire kitty on the India all-rounder.

KKR released Iyer ahead of the auction but this is a massive coup for them, who has been a consistent performer for them. Iyer amassed 370 runs in the IPL 2024 season for KKR and scored 404 runs in the season before.
The IPL 2024 champions failed to sign any of the marquee players on the day. They went up to some extent for their former captain Shreyas Iyer, but failed to get him. They were reluctant to bid for KL Rahul after an amount either, who was sold to Delhi Capitals for Rs 14 crore.
Although the amount of money looks a bit inflated, here are three possible reasons why KKR went all guns blazing for Iyer.
Venkatesh Iyer brings an invaluable mix of batting and bowling skills, making him a genuine all-rounder. With his explosive batting at the top or in the middle order and his ability to contribute with the ball, Iyer offers flexibility across match scenarios. Perhaps that is the reason they went for him.
Iyer has consistently proven his worth since his IPL debut in 2021. His impactful performances, including a century in IPL 2023, showcase his ability to rise in high-pressure games. His recent domestic cricket form has also been commendable, further reinforcing his value as a dependable performer. This consistency, coupled with his big-game temperament, which was in full tilt in IPL 2024, makes him a prized asset for KKR.
KKR's approach in recent years has been to build and retain a strong core of players who align with their playing philosophy. By re-signing Iyer, they've ensured stability and continuity in their squad. KKR has been vocal about eight retentions in the past and the aggressive bidding for Iyer shows how much they wanted to keep the player in their ranks.
Although KKR's exorbitant payment for Venkatesh Iyer may seem like a massive overpay, the franchise has a history of the same kind of strategy, where they leave no stone unturned for the players they believe in. Venkatesh has been a mainstay at KKR for a long time and the management does exhibit massive trust in him.
The Madhya Pradesh player was instrumental in KKR winning the IPL last season and the Kolkata Knight Riders have repaid their faith with a windfall for the player. The kind of faith KKR has shown galvanizes one and Venkatesh will have the onus now to showcase his class with the Purple and Gold.
Iyer staying at KKR is massive news for the fans and experts alike, but only time will tell whether his price tag is justified. But in the world of franchise cricket's cruel nature, this moment of act from the Knight Riders is definitely a poetic justice.
