Ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction, the defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders announced their retention list and expectedly, the Knights have maintained their core team by retaining the key players, including two uncapped players.
KKR have retained six players for IPL 2025 and has maintained a balanced squad. With these retentions totalling to Rs. 69 crores, KKR heads into the mega auction with a purse of around Rs. 51 crores.

Rishabh Pant is currently one of the top wicketkeeper-batters in India and he has the experience of captaincy in IPL, as he led Delhi Capitals in the past. However, the shocking release of Pant by DC made sure that he would enter the upcoming mega auction. Along with being a dependable batting option, he is also a perfect candidate for the captaincy role.
Given his skill set and profile, Pant will likely attract very high bids from multiple franchises in need of a top-order batter, wicketkeeper, or leader. This competition could quickly drive Pant’s price beyond what KKR could comfortably afford without compromising its overall auction strategy.
KKR will enter the IPL 2025 auction with a moderate budget of Rs. 51 crore, especially compared to a few other teams. Spending a large portion of their budget on Pant could restrict KKR’s flexibility to fill other crucial gaps in their squad.
KKR need to buy players for the top-order batting, as their bowling and middle-order batting core has been retained. To address these needs, KKR would ideally look for multiple quality players instead of committing a substantial portion of their funds to one high-profile signing.
Traditionally KKR remains a bowling-heavy side. In the history of the three-time champions, they never broke the bank for a star batter. It is very unlikely that KKR will go all the way to sign Pant, even a player with his profile is very much needed for them.
In essence, KKR may find it difficult to defend a substantial investment in Pant given their modest auction purse, particularly if it could limit their capacity to assemble a well-rounded team. They can instead concentrate on low-cost signings that complement their squad composition and offer greater strategic depth.
