IPL 2025 Auction: Not Dads' Army, Michael Vaughan Explains Why Chennai Super Kings Would Go After James Anderson

By MyKhel Staff

Former England captain Michael Vaughan believes veteran pacer James Anderson could be the perfect fit for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the IPL 2025 season.

Anderson, who retired from Test cricket earlier this year, has shocked the cricketing world by registering himself for the IPL auction for the first time at the age of 42.

IPL 2025 Auction Why Michael Vaughan Believes Chennai Super Kings Would Go After James Anderson

The legendary fast bowler, known for his remarkable ability to swing the ball, has a base price of Rs 1.25 crore for the upcoming mega auction, scheduled for November 24-25 in Jeddah. Speaking on the "Club Prairie Fire Podcast," which he co-hosted with Australian great Adam Gilchrist, Vaughan shared his thoughts on Anderson's potential in the IPL and why he believes CSK could be an ideal destination.

The CSK Fit: Emphasis on Swing Bowling

Vaughan suggested that Anderson's renowned skills with the new ball make him a strong candidate for CSK, a franchise that has consistently valued swing bowlers to exploit the early overs. "I would not be surprised if Jimmy Anderson ends up at Chennai Super Kings," Vaughan remarked.

He pointed out CSK's history of recruiting pacers who excel at swinging the ball, citing examples like Shardul Thakur, who provided crucial breakthroughs with the new ball in the powerplay overs.

With Anderson's ability to move the ball prodigiously, Vaughan believes he could be CSK's next go-to bowler for dismantling the opposition's top orders in the initial stages of the game.

"Chennai is a team that likes someone who can swing it inside the first few overs," Vaughan explained. "They have always had a swinger. It would not surprise me if Jimmy Anderson ends up at Chennai."

Anderson's Unfinished Business in T20 Cricket

Anderson's entry into the IPL auction reflects his desire to explore the shortest format of the game, which he has largely overlooked throughout his career. The Englishman last played a T20 match in 2014 and has never participated in any franchise T20 league, prioritising Test cricket for England. However, Anderson recently revealed that he wants to embrace new challenges and expand his knowledge of the game, which he believes the IPL experience can offer.

"There is still definitely something in me that thinks I can still play," Anderson shared on a BBC Radio podcast. "I have never done the IPL; I have never experienced it, and I feel like I have more to give as a player." Anderson's motivation isn't only about competing but also about gaining insights and enriching his cricketing experience.

A New Learning Curve for the Veteran Pacer

Apart from his potential impact on the field, Anderson has expressed his interest in learning and mentoring as part of the IPL. Since retiring from international cricket, he has been working with the England team as a mentor, and he believes that exposure to a high-stakes league like the IPL will further enhance his cricketing acumen.

"I just think opening my eyes to something like that and experiencing it, sort of might help me grow my knowledge of the game and help further down the line," Anderson explained.

This approach aligns with CSK's culture of fostering experienced players who contribute both on and off the field. Under the leadership of MS Dhoni, the franchise has become known for making the most of players' cricketing intelligence and ability to mentor younger teammates, which makes Anderson an attractive prospect beyond his on-field prowess.

The Buzz Around the IPL 2025 Mega Auction

With Anderson joining over 1,500 players registered for the IPL 2025 mega auction, cricket fans are eager to see if a franchise will take a chance on the English swing king. His decision to enter the auction for the first time at this stage of his career is bound to draw interest from franchises looking for experience and tactical insight.

Given CSK's affinity for seasoned players and swing bowlers, Vaughan's speculation has sparked excitement among fans who would love to see Anderson donning the yellow jersey.
