IPL 2025 mega auction is about to take place on 24-25 November 2024. Kolkata Knight Riders will enter the mega auction with six retained players and a purse value of Rs. 51 crore. However, despite retaining their core team intact, the defending champions have released many of their key players, including their captain, Shreyas Iyer.
One of the key batters of the Knights in recent years, Nitish Rana, also has been released by KKR. Rana also happened to be the vice-captain of the team and captained the Kolkata-based franchise in IPL 2023, as their regular captain, Shreyas Iyer, missed the season due to injury.

Nitish Rana, the 31-year-old batting all-rounder joined KKR in 2018 for a price of Rs. 3.4 crore. Since then he played 90 matches for KKR and scored 2199 runs. He missed most of the last IPL due to an injury and played only two matches. Along with being a skilled batter in the middle order, his leadership quality also makes him an important player in this format of cricket.
Though the Knight Riders have maintained their bowling unit and the lower middle order of batting line-up intact by retaining players like Sunil Narine, Andre Russel, Rinku Singh and Varun Chakravarthy, they had to release the whole of the top order batters, including Nitish Rana.
Hence, the Knights will be in the market to fill up their opener spot and upper middle order of the batting line-up. After releasing Shreyas Iyer, a face for the captaincy role is also needed. Rana has the potential to fit both requirements and surely, the Knights will go for him.
However, a limited purse balance after retaining six players and the unavailability of any 'Right to Match' (RTM) option could trouble KKR in the auction, as many of the other franchises will be looking for players with similar profiles and some of them have a significantly larger purse than KKR.
The left-handed batter, due to his excellent batting skills, flexibility in batting positions, ability to play against spin and aggressive playing style became a key player for the Knights for years. His experience in IPL and leadership ability also make him more valuable in the auction. Here are the IPL teams except KKR that could potentially target Nitish Rana in the IPL 2025 mega auction:
DC also released all of their key batters except Tristan Stubbs and Abishek Porel, and they will also look for experienced batters who can anchor the innings. Also, Rana's leadership ability will be a factor for them.
After going for a complete revamp of their squad PBKS needs to build their squad from scratch. An experienced batter like Rana, who can handle the pressure in difficult situations, will be much needed for Punjab as they have suffered on many occasions in the past for lacking that quality in their squad. Rana could give the required stability to the PBKS middle order.
The only top-order batter CSK have retained is the captain Ruturaj Gaikwad. Hence, CSK needs another experienced batter in the top or upper middle order to anchor their innings. Also, Rana's ability to play spin bowling could come in handy at Chepauk's spin-friendly pitch.
