IPL 2025: The Indian Premier League (IPL) will be back in a few weeks time and is slated to begin on March 22, featuring a thrilling opener between Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
But ahead of the action, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has issued stringent regulations for all 10 franchises regarding their practice schedules.

As per a report by Cricbuzz, the BCCI has informed all franchises that they will be permitted a maximum of seven practice sessions before their first match. These sessions, which can last up to three hours under floodlights, include an option to conduct two practice matches. However, these practice matches must be played on side wickets rather than the main pitch. Furthermore, if a team opt to hold a practice match under lights, the total duration should not exceed three and a half hours. Teams must also obtain prior written approval from the BCCI to conduct these practice games.
A BCCI note quoted by Cricbuzz states: "In advance of the first match of the season and as set out in the Stadium Agreement, teams may have up to seven (7) practice sessions of up to three (3) hours in duration under floodlights, of which two (2) can be practice matches or open nets as decided by the team. The practice matches to take place on one of the side wickets of the main square. If a team is playing a practice match under lights, the duration of the match should not exceed more than three and a half hours. As per the Operational Rules, practice matches require the prior written approval of the BCCI."
To ensure that the pitch remains in prime condition for the upcoming season, no team will be allowed to hold practice sessions or matches on the main square in the four days leading up to their first home game. However, each franchise will be allocated a side wicket for range-hitting drills during this period. Additionally, the home team may coordinate with the respective State Association if they require any further arrangements.
These guidelines indicate the BCCI's commitment to maintaining pitch quality and ensuring a fair playing field for all teams. As the countdown to IPL 2025 begins, teams will have to adapt to these new restrictions while fine-tuning their preparations for the high-stakes tournament.
