The Indian Premier League has officially approved a one-time provision allowing franchises to sign temporary replacement players for the concluding leg of the rescheduled 2025 season.
The tournament is set to resume this Saturday (May 17) following a brief suspension triggered by heightened cross-border tensions between India and Pakistan.

While most overseas players are expected to return to India for the remainder of the competition, a few have opted out due to scheduling conflicts with other commitments. But the replacements won't be eligible for retention for the IPL 2026 season.
"Given the non-availability of certain foreign players due to national commitments or personal reasons or any injury or illness, Temporary Replacement Players will be allowed until the conclusion of this tournament," a memo from IPL sent to the franchises read.
"This decision is subject to the condition that the Temporary Replacement players taken from this point forward will not be eligible for retention in the following year. Temporary Replacement players will have to register for the IPL Player Auction 2026," it added.
Among the notable withdrawals are Jake Fraser-McGurk of Delhi Capitals and Jamie Overton of Chennai Super Kings. Their absence has prompted franchises to seek short-term solutions, with the league offering flexibility to ensure team balance during the business end of the tournament.
Delhi Capitals have already roped in Bangladeshi pacer Mustafizur Rahman as a replacement, but the Bangladesh international will not be eligible for retention.
RCB - Royal Challengers Bengaluru are set to be without Josh Hazlewood, who is unlikely to return for the remainder of the season. RCB are also likely not to have Jacob Bethell, Lungi Ngidi during the playoffs.
CSK - CSK have also lost Jamie Overton for the remainder but given their playoff hopes are already gone, the Super Kings may not sign a replacement.
PBKS - Punjab Kings are without Marco Jansen for the playoffs and the Kings may look to bring in a replacement.
MI - Will Jacks, Corbin Bosch and Ryan Rickelton are likely to miss out for the Mumbai Indians and they may need significant reinforcements for the remainder of IPL 2025.
With South Africa and Australia players joining their national camps ahead of the WTC Final 2025, this leaves a huge void for the IPL teams to bring in replacements.
