IPL 2025: In a development that's got both Lankan fans and IPL loyalists buzzing, Dasun Shanaka is reportedly set to return to the Indian Premier League, donning the Gujarat Titans jersey once again as a replacement for injured New Zealand all-rounder Glenn Phillips.
According to a Newswire report quoting sources within Sri Lanka Cricket, Shanaka is set to fly to India soon, pending final formalities.

The Gujarat Titans, currently second on the IPL 2025 points table with eight points from six matches, appear to be bolstering their squad ahead of the business end of the season. With their next game lined up against Delhi Capitals on April 19 at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Shanaka’s inclusion could bring just the right spark.
Bought for ₹2 crore in the mega auction, Glenn Phillips had been warming the bench until he came on to field against Sunrisers Hyderabad. It was in this very game on April 6 that tragedy struck—a groin injury while fielding led to his untimely exit from the tournament. He returned to New Zealand on April 12. “Gujarat Titans wish Glenn a speedy recovery,” the franchise stated in an official release.
Phillips did not face a single delivery in IPL 2025, making this an unfortunate and fruitless campaign for the Kiwi.
While Gujarat have not made an official announcement yet, reports strongly indicate that Dasun Shanaka will be Phillips' replacement, marking his second stint with the franchise. He was part of the Titans squad in 2023, playing three matches and scoring 26 runs, albeit without getting a bowl.
Though not a standout IPL record, Shanaka brings recent form to the table. He was a crucial cog in Dubai Capitals' title-winning campaign in the ILT20, racking up 164 runs in 10 innings at an average of 27.33 and taking 4 wickets. He also featured for Dambulla and Sinhalese Sports Club in Sri Lanka’s domestic competitions, underlining his all-format readiness.
This move could prove strategic as Shubman Gill's Titans look to cement their playoff berth. Gujarat started the season sluggishly but have climbed swiftly up the ladder. With four wins in six games, they are level on points with the Delhi Capitals, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Punjab Kings, and Lucknow Super Giants—all sitting tight in the top half of the table.
Shanaka's versatility as a hard-hitting middle-order batter and medium-pace option may just provide the right balance Gujarat need as they eye a strong finish. Though he didn't quite catch fire in IPL 2023, the Lankan captain has a point to prove—and perhaps, nothing fuels a player more than unfinished business.
Fans across both Sri Lanka and India will be keenly watching how this next chapter unfolds. Will Shanaka turn this second chance into something special? All eyes now shift to April 19, where Gujarat take on Delhi, possibly with a Lankan lion in their den.
