IPL 2025: Can Rohit Sharma's dipping form make KL Rahul one of the leadership contenders for Test captaincy in England?

The way KL Rahul is batting for his IPL franchise Delhi Capitals, he could well be one of the choices for the national selectors to lead India in the England Test series, sources told MyKhel.

Rohit Sharma had made a case for himself after the Champions Trophy win in Dubai but is now struggling big time to find his feet in IPL 2025. Therefore, the national selectors may not be completely convinced about Rohit's continuity as Test captain.

Rahul has captained India in Tests before, and while his track record is a bit mixed, his calm demeanor and experience in English conditions do give him an edge. If he continues performing well with the bat and shows tactical sharpness in the IPL, the selectors might definitely take a second look - especially if Rohit's form continues to dip.

However, there is also a section in the BCCI which feels that Rohit has been a solid Test captain overall, especially at home, and the board should weigh continuity and experience, particularly for a tough tour like England. But if the captain isn't scoring runs, what can anyone do? The fact that Rohit is struggling to even score at home is a dampner. How will he contribute in challenging conditions like England?

Only four to five players are certain in the Test playing XI. Virat Kohli has already said no to Test captaincy, while Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal aren't ready for Test captaincy as yet. Jasprit Bumrah could be a top choice here along with Rahul, but Rohit isn't fitting the bill at all. "The selectors must be very worried with Rohit's form," a source revealed.

Meanwhile. Sai Sudarshan and Karun Nair are also in the fray for the England series. With Sai scoring heavily in IPL, the selectors are also looking at him as a future opener in Test cricket for compact technique. Even names like Sai Kishore is doing the rounds.
