Virat Kohli continued his record-breaking spree as the chase master claimed the top spot for most runs scored by a batter in successful run chases in Indian Premier League (IPL) history.
Kohli achieved the feat during Royal Challengers Bengaluru's IPL 2025 opening match victory over the defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Saturday (March 22).

Needing 14 runs to topple former opener Shikhar Dhawan from the summit, Kohli got past his compatriot and of IPL's greats' tally with an unbeaten 59 off 36 balls as RCB beat KKR by 7 wickets in the curtain-raiser.
Following the latest knock, Kohli has now accumulated 2205 runs during successful run chases for RCB in IPL. Dhawan had held the record with 2159 runs in 53 innings, while Kohli overtook his tally in his 59th successful chasing contribution.
Before going past Dhawan, Kohli also had surpassed several other IPL greats to take the top spot. The list for most runs scored in successful chases also includes veterans Gautam Gambhir, Suresh Raina and David Warner. Here is a look at their chasing records:
With this innings in KKR vs RCB, Kohli extended his overall runs tally to 8063 runs, and also became the first batter to score 1000 plus runs against four different teams, bettering the record of two teams held by his compatriot Rohit Sharma, and Warner, who is not part of IPL this season.
Kohli now has 1000-plus runs against Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Capitals, Punjab Kings and KKR, while Rohit and Warner have completed 1000-plus runs against two franchises each. The former Australian southpaw has achieved the feat against KKR and PBKS, while Rohit has done it against KKR and DC.
The appearance against KKR also saw Kohli become just the third Indian to hit 400 T20 matches mark. Rohit (448) and Dinesh Karthik (412) stand ahead of Virat in the list for most appearances by an Indian player in T20s.
Kohli was also felicitated with 'IPL 18' momento by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Roger Binny during the opening ceremony of the 18th edition of the Indian Premier League on Saturday.
