IPL 2025: What went Wrong for Chennai Super Kings This Season? A Multifaceted CSK Capitulation

A defeat at the Chepauk against Punjab Kings meant that Chennai Super Kings became the first team to be eliminated in the IPL 2025.

The five-time champions have hit the floor in a horrific fashion. After winning their first match at home against Mumbai Indians, things have gone south for them. With two wins in ten matches, they are languishing at the bottom of the table.

IPL 2025 CSK Capitulation - What went Wrong for Chennai Super Kings This Season

It has been a season of agony and gross disappointment for CSK. The performances, the injuries and the recruitments - all have haunted them big time. Amid Ruturaj Gaikwad's season-ending injury, the arrival of MS Dhoni as captain couldn't spark a 'Remontada' for the team from Chennai.

But if we dissect CSK's downfall this season, a multifaceted theory shall emerge. Despite the injuries, which has thwarted almost all the teams, the Super Kings have looked pale this season. Their legend Suresh Raina was in disbelief and once said he never saw CSK like they are this season.

Overdependence on MS Dhoni's Leadership

At 43, MS Dhoni was forced to take over the captaincy reins again after Ruturaj Gaikwad's injury, and while his stature remains unmatched, the team's overreliance on Dhoni's aura has backfired. His presence continues to command respect, but CSK's repeated dependence on his late-order cameos and tactical nous shows a lack of succession planning.

The team has been reluctant to groom a next-gen leader, and it shows in their body language and inability to recover from collapses. Dhoni still has his moments - like the thunderous 11 off 4 balls vs PBKS - but the strategy of pinning hope on one man has clearly become outdated.

Awful Auction Strategy

CSK's 2025 auction was a textbook example of nostalgia-driven errors and misreading the T20 market. Big investments were made in names rather than form - Ravichandran Ashwin (₹9.75 Cr), Noor Ahmad (₹10 Cr), Deepak Hooda, Vijay Shankar, Rahul Tripathi. And apart from Noor Ahmad, everyone have failed to live up to their prices.

Even coach Stephen Fleming admitted, "We got a few things wrong. Other teams were sharper than us in the auction."

This candid admission highlights the recruitment blunders. CSK's reluctance to target younger, multi-dimensional players - who could be assets for the future - left them with a top-heavy and misfiring squad. Former CSK player Harbhajan Singh also blasted their scouts for their recruits, which has proved to be a flop this season.

They didn't go for players such as KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer in the auction. Despite having a decent purse, CSK failed to strategize properly and that has reflected in their season big time.

Gross Underperformance of Star Players

CSK's campaign has suffered not just because of poor selections, but also the sheer lack of returns from supposed key players:

Rachin Ravindra - 191 runs, SR 128.18

Devon Conway - 94 runs, SR 127.02

Rahul Tripathi - 55 runs, SR 96.49

Ravindra Jadeja - 166 runs, SR 125.75

This is a side still operating with the conservative T20 approach of yesteryears. With the lowest run rate in the league (8.23) and only one 200-plus score in 10 matches, CSK's batting lacks fluency, fearlessness, and modern-day adaptability. The middle-order has collapsed repeatedly, and the powerplay returns have been among the worst.

Chennai Super Kings have paid the price for outdated planning, nostalgia-led auctions, and an unwillingness to evolve. Their fall from grace in IPL 2025 isn't shocking - it's a culmination of strategic stagnation.
