Ashutosh Sharma's breathtaking performance against Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 2025 has reignited the debate over his batting position. The Delhi Capitals' explosive batter turned the game on its head with a match-winning knock, prompting his childhood coach, Amey Khurasiya, to advocate for his promotion as an opener.
Ashutosh was instrumental in Delhi Capitals' thrilling one-wicket victory, scoring an unbeaten 66 off just 31 balls. His innings, featuring five sixes and five fours, came when the team was in dire straits at 7/3 and later 113/6.

His fearless strokeplay, especially against top bowlers, proved why he is considered one of the most dangerous batters in T20 cricket. Khurasiya, who has mentored Ashutosh since childhood, believes Delhi Capitals should capitalize on his aggressive approach by sending him to open the innings. He insists that Ashutosh's ability to dominate the Powerplay makes him an invaluable asset at the top.
"If Delhi wants to win their maiden title, they must send him to open the innings. He is a nightmare for bowlers in the Powerplay," Khurasiya told TimesofIndia.com.
Beyond his batting, Ashutosh's versatility stands out. He started his career as an opening batter and wicketkeeper in Madhya Pradesh cricket before evolving into a hard-hitting finisher. According to Khurasiya, his adaptability and skill set make him a perfect candidate for India's T20 squad.
"He can hook, pull, cut, and innovate shots effortlessly against 140 kmph deliveries. Players like him need to be identified early and given consistent opportunities."
The 26-year-old made headlines in October 2023 when he smashed the fastest fifty by an Indian in T20 cricket-off just 11 balls-breaking Yuvraj Singh's long-standing record. His blistering performances earned him an IPL contract with Punjab Kings, where he impressed with 189 runs at a strike rate of 167.However, Punjab released him ahead of the IPL 2025 Mega Auction, and Delhi Capitals seized the opportunity to sign him for ₹3.8 crore.
Now, with a chance to make a mark, Ashutosh Sharma could be the X-factor Delhi Capitals need at the top of the order. His ability to take on bowlers early, coupled with his temperament under pressure, might just be the key to DC's title hopes.
