IPL 2025: From Saliva Use To Second Ball- New Rules Introduced in 18th Edition
IPL 2025: We are exactly a night's sleep away from the opening match of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 as defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) take on Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
Ahead of the big clash, the tournament will see a number of rules changes, which will help us to provide transparency to the smooth initiation of the game.

Here's a look a the rule changes to look forward to:-
1. Reintroduction of Saliva for Ball Maintenance
After a hiatus due to COVID-19 precautions, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has lifted the ban on using saliva to shine the ball. This change allows bowlers to employ traditional methods to maintain the ball's condition, potentially aiding swing and adding a strategic layer to the game.
2. 'Second Ball' Rule to Combat Dew in Night Matches
To address the challenges posed by dew during night games, the IPL has introduced the 'Second Ball' rule. In the second innings of night matches, after the 11th over, umpires can assess the ball's condition. If excessive dew is affecting play, they may permit the use of a dry, scuffed ball as a replacement. Fielding teams can appeal for this change, but the final decision rests with the umpires. This rule is primarily designed for night matches and is unlikely to be applied in afternoon games.
3. Hawk-Eye Technology for Enhanced Decision-Making
Expanding the use of technology, Hawk-Eye will now assist in adjudicating off-side and head-high wides, in addition to waist-high no-balls. This enhancement aims to improve the accuracy of umpiring decisions and ensure consistency across matches.
4. Revised Penalties for Slow Over-Rates
The IPL has revised its approach to managing slow over-rates. Previously, captains faced a one-match suspension after three offences in a season. From IPL 2025 onwards, such infractions will result in fines and in-game field restrictions instead. However, any sanctions imposed before the 2025 season will still be enforced.
5. Continuation of the Impact Player Rule
The Impact Player rule, introduced in the previous season, will continue in IPL 2025. This rule allows teams to substitute a player during a match, adding strategic depth and flexibility to team compositions. It has gained widespread criticism from players, legends and fans alike as it somehow hampered the role of an all-rounder in the game. But the BCCI have decided to go with the rule for the second consecutive season.
