IPL 2025, GT vs LSG: What Was the Turning Point as Lucknow Super Giants Clinched a 33-Run Victory?

IPL 2025, GT vs LSG: In a clash brimming with fireworks and fluctuations, Lucknow Super Giants held their nerve to defeat Gujarat Titans by 33 runs in Ahmedabad, keeping their playoff hopes flickering.

But the defining moment of this high-scoring encounter came in the 17th over, when Kiwi pacer William O’Rourke turned the tide with a game-changing double strike, dismissing both Sherfane Rutherford and Rahul Tewatia in the space of five balls.

IPL 2025 GT vs LSG What Was the Turning Point as Lucknow Super Giants Clinched a 33-Run Victory

Having been set a mammoth target of 236 – thanks to a dazzling 117 from Mitchell Marsh and a blistering finish from Nicholas Pooran – Gujarat were always chasing shadows. And yet, as long as the explosive Rutherford and the ever-dangerous Tewatia were at the crease, the home crowd still dared to dream. But O’Rourke’s clinical composure with the ball squashed those hopes in a blink.

Turning Point: O’Rourke’s Ice-Cool Over Sinks GT’s Momentum

With Gujarat positioned at 182 for 3 at the end of 16 overs, the equation read 54 off 24 balls – steep but within striking range considering the firepower at their disposal. Enter William O’Rourke, summoned for his final spell by KL Rahul with the game hanging delicately.

First ball: a short-of-a-length delivery on the pads. Rutherford, who had already hammered three sixes in his 38-run cameo, went for the pick-up shot but mistimed it. Substitute fielder Ravi Bishnoi made no mistake at deep mid-wicket, diving low to complete a composed catch.

A couple of singles followed before the sixth ball – an innocuous length delivery – proved fatal for Rahul Tewatia. Trying to go big down the ground, Tewatia mistimed it completely, sending the ball straight to Himmat Singh at long-on. Two wickets in the over. Gujarat’s last recognised power-hitters gone. Their chase, all but over.

Marsh Mayhem & Pooran Power: LSG’s Record-Breaking First Innings

Lucknow’s 235 for 2 was their highest total in IPL history, built on the back of Mitchell Marsh’s brutal 117 off just 64 balls, studded with 10 sixes and 8 boundaries. It was a masterclass in clean, conventional ball-striking from the Australian, who seemed in complete command from the outset.

Partnering with Aiden Markram initially and later Nicholas Pooran, Marsh never let the run rate dip below 11. Even Rashid Khan and Mohammed Siraj, usually Gujarat’s trump cards, found themselves toothless against Marsh’s majestic form. Markram contributed a swift 36, but the real fireworks came at the death when Pooran unleashed carnage, smoking 56 off 27 balls to lift Lucknow well past the 230-mark.

The Titans’ bowling unit looked rattled and out of ideas. Arshad Khan and Sai Kishore picked up a wicket apiece, but both leaked runs at over 11 an over. Even Rashid, Gujarat’s bankable talisman, conceded 36 off just two overs – a rare off-day.

Gujarat’s Brave Chase, But Lacked the Finish

Despite the daunting ask, Gujarat came out swinging. Skipper Shubman Gill’s blazing 35 off 20 and Jos Buttler’s crisp 33 ensured GT were ahead of the rate early on. When Shahrukh Khan exploded with a 29-ball 57 and Rutherford provided the finishing sparks, the Titans looked poised for a heist.

But the lack of depth in the middle order, a theme all season, haunted them again. Once O’Rourke removed the twin threats in one over, the tail folded tamely. Arshad Khan, Rabada, and Sai Kishore managed just 10 runs collectively, with none lasting more than five deliveries.

Shahrukh’s fifty was GT’s first from a middle-order batter this season – a statistic that speaks volumes about their ongoing instability after the top three. And when it mattered most, no one could complement his brilliance.

O’Rourke – The Silent Match-Winner

While Marsh and Pooran took home the batting plaudits, William O’Rourke’s 4-0-27-3 stood tall as the most impactful bowling performance of the night. He bowled with pace, precision, and most impressively, timing – returning at just the right moment to snatch the game away from Gujarat’s grasp.

His dismissals of Rutherford and Tewatia weren't just numbers on a card – they were gut punches delivered when Gujarat were dreaming big. That decisive 17th over, where just four runs were scored and two scalps fell, flipped the game on its head.

Final Scorecard

  • Lucknow Super Giants: 235/2 in 20 overs (Marsh 117, Pooran 56*)
  • Gujarat Titans: 202/9 in 20 overs (Shahrukh Khan 57, Rutherford 38; O’Rourke 3/27)
  • Result: Lucknow Super Giants won by 33 runs
  • Turning Point: William O’Rourke’s double-wicket 17th over – removing Rutherford and Tewatia – that derailed GT’s chase completely.
