IPL 2025: In a match that saw records tumble and boundaries rain down in Hyderabad, Jofra Archer found himself on the wrong side of IPL history.
The Rajasthan Royals pacer conceded 76 runs in his four-over spell against Sunrisers Hyderabad, recording the most expensive bowling figures in the tournament’s history.

Archer’s nightmare outing came during SRH’s explosive innings of 286/6, the second-highest total ever recorded in IPL history. The English quick, renowned for his pace and accuracy, was left bewildered as Abhishek Sharma (24 off 11), Travis Head (67 off 31), and Ishan Kishan (106 off 47) took him apart.
Before Archer’s unwanted record, Mohit Sharma of Gujarat Titans held the dubious honour with 0/73 against Delhi Capitals in 2024. Despite his seasoned experience and variations, Mohit found no answers as Rishabh Pant and Jake Fraser-McGurk unleashed carnage in Delhi. Mohit had admitted then: “I tried everything I could, but sometimes the ball just disappears. All I can do is move on.”
Basil Thampi’s 0/70 for Sunrisers Hyderabad against Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2018 remains etched in fans’ memories. On a small Chinnaswamy ground, AB de Villiers and Moeen Ali dismantled Thampi, who was left searching for answers. While Thampi’s career never quite recovered, his record stood for years until newer expensive spells emerged.
The IPL 2023 match between Gujarat Titans and Kolkata Knight Riders became infamous for Rinku Singh’s five consecutive sixes off Yash Dayal. That game also saw Dayal conceding 0/69, with KKR pulling off a miracle chase. In a rare moment of honesty, Dayal later revealed: “I couldn’t sleep for nights. But cricket teaches you the hardest lessons.”
Among the top six most expensive bowling figures, Reece Topley and Luke Wood both feature with identical returns of 1/68. Topley’s forgettable spell came against SRH in Bengaluru in 2024, while Luke Wood faced the wrath of Delhi Capitals batters the same year. Despite picking up a wicket each, both pacers saw their names added to this undesirable list.
In the match that created new records, SRH posted a mammoth 286/6. Ishan Kishan was the standout performer, smashing an unbeaten 106 off just 47 deliveries, with Nitish Reddy (30 off 15) and Travis Head (67 off 31) providing perfect support. Rajasthan Royals, despite valiant efforts from Sanju Samson (66 off 37) and Dhruv Jurel (70 off 35), fell short by 44 runs.
SRH skipper Pat Cummins praised the batting effort: “It was phenomenal. Everything clicked. Ishan was in a different zone, and the entire top order played fearless cricket.”
On the other side, Rajasthan Royals captain Riyan Parag admitted: “We tried to contain them, but it was just one of those days where nothing went to plan. Credit to their batting unit.”
