IPL 2025: KKR Allege Injustice in Mail to BCCI After RCB Washout, Blame Delayed Rule Change for Playoff Elimination

IPL 2025: Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have voiced their strong displeasure with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) after their virtual do-or-die clash against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on May 17 was washed out.

In an email to IPL COO Hemang Amin, KKR CEO Venky Mysore questioned the timing and fairness of a crucial mid-season rule change that came just a day too late to potentially save their playoff hopes.

IPL 2025 KKR Allege Injustice in Mail to BCCI After RCB Washout Blame Delayed Rule Change for Playoff Elimination

The controversy comes in the wake of BCCI's decision to add an additional hour (total 120 minutes) of extra waiting time for rain-affected games, citing forecasts that "several matches are at risk of being affected by rain." The ruling was enforced from May 20 onward - three days after the rain-marred KKR vs RCB clash in Bengaluru, which ended in a no-result.

"While these mid-season changes to the rules may be necessary under the circumstances, one would have expected more consistency in the way such changes are being applied," Mysore wrote in the strongly-worded email.

KKR were clinging on to mathematical playoff hopes heading into that game. With 12 points from 13 games and only one match left to play, the maximum they can now reach is 14 - not enough to guarantee a top-four finish. The team has had two matches washed out this season, compounding their frustrations.

"When the IPL re-started (on May 17), it was clear that the first game on May 17 KKR vs RCB was at high risk of being interrupted due to rain in B'lore. The forecast was there for all to see. Not only was the game washed out, but the additional 120 minutes now being applied may have provided a chance of at least a 5 over a side game (sic)," Mysore pointed out.

The BCCI's updated provision means a 7:30 PM IST match can now start as late as 9:30 PM without any reduction in overs. The cut-off time for a five-over match has also been extended to 11:56 PM, with the toss needing to happen by 11:40 PM. Under the previous rules, the latest a five-over match could begin was 10:56 PM.

The KKR camp believes that had these changes been implemented just a few days earlier, the match against RCB could have at least yielded a result - something that may have kept their playoff hopes alive.

"The washout ended KKR chances of making the playoffs. Such ad hoc decisions and inconsistencies of applying them are not appropriate for a tournament of this standing," Mysore continued. "I am sure you also understand why we feel aggrieved."

According to a Cricbuzz report, other franchises have also expressed discontent over the timing of the rule change, arguing that altering regulations mid-season can lead to unfair advantages and sets a questionable precedent.

While the BCCI might have intended to proactively address weather disruptions, the Knight Riders' mail suggests that the damage was already done - and now, they're left to ponder what might have been.
