IPL 2025: KKR in advanced talks with this Legend to replace Gautam Gambhir as Mentor

Kolkata Knight Riders are in need of a new mentor after Gautam Gambhir's departure from the franchise.

Gautam Gambhir, who mentored the Lucknow Super Giants in two IPL seasons, joined KKR ahead of the 2024 season. His guidance was instrumental in leading KKR to their third IPL title. Gambhir had previously captained KKR to two title wins, in 2012 and 2014 respectively.

But after his title win KKR, the former India batter has left for bigger duties. He has been appointed as the new head coach of the Indian team as Rahul Dravid stepped down from his duties.

Although Dravid was linked with KKR for a period, the former coach has recently joined Rajasthan Royals for a new stint at the franchise.

Amid this, reports from the Telegraph suggest that discussions are ongoing between the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Kumar Sangakkara regarding a potential mentorship role.

Kumar Sangakkara, currently serving as director of cricket at Rajasthan Royals since 2021, is reportedly set to leave the franchise. This decision follows Rajasthan Royals' appointment of Rahul Dravid as their head coach for the 2025 IPL season.

Sangakkara is reportedly exploring offers from other IPL franchises. Meanwhile, KKR's coaching setup has been depleted with Gambhir and assistant coach Abhishek Nayar joining the Indian national team. Additionally, Ryan ten Doeschate has joined Gambhir's support staff as fielding coach.

The former Sri Lanka captain is said to be in advanced talks with KKR and a decision on his appointment is expected soon. If he joins KKR, it would be a significant boost to their coaching team. Sangakkara has a strong reputation in the IPL, having led Rajasthan Royals to consistent success and playoff appearances.

The departures of key figures like Gambhir and Nayar has left a void in KKR's coaching staff. The addition of Sangakkara could provide much-needed experience and guidance to KKR players ahead of next season. The departure of Nayar and Ten Doeschate mean the Knight Riders may opt for a few other coaching staff as well.
