IPL 2025: As the Delhi Capitals (DC) gear up for the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) season, the franchise faces a pivotal decision: appointing a new captain. After the departure of Rishabh Pant to Lucknow Super Giants, DC are in search of a like-for-like replacement.
The primary contenders as per reports are new signing KL Rahul, India star batsman with extensive leadership experience, and Axar Patel, a long-standing team member of the Capitals known for his all-round capabilities.

KL Rahul's IPL journey began with the Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2013. Over the years, he has showcased his batting prowess across various franchises. His leadership tenure includes captaining the Punjab Kings from 2020 to 2021 and the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) from 2022 to 2024. Under his captaincy, LSG reached the playoffs in their debut season, with Rahul amassing 616 runs at an average of 51.33, including two centuries. However, the 2024 season saw challenges, culminating in a publicized disagreement with the franchise's owner and his subsequent release. The Delhi Capitals acquired Rahul for ₹14 crore in the 2025 IPL Mega Auction.
Axar Patel has been integral to the Delhi Capitals since 2019, consistently delivering with both bat and ball. While he hasn't captained an IPL team, his deep understanding of the DC setup and rapport with teammates make him a strong internal candidate. His international experience and consistent performances add to his leadership potential.
Experience vs. Familiarity: Rahul's prior captaincy in the IPL provides him with a strategic edge. In contrast, Axar's long-term association with DC offers continuity and an intrinsic understanding of the team's vision.
Batting Dynamics: Rahul's role as a top-order batsman could influence the team's batting strategy under his leadership. Axar, being an all-rounder, brings versatility but lacks top-order batting experience.
Team Culture: Axar's established relationships within the team might foster a cohesive environment. However, Rahul's fresh perspective could introduce new strategies and invigorate the squad.
It will be a good sign for Delhi as both the players will be entering the tournament, having pulled off valuable contributions in India's victorious Champions Trophy 2025 campaign. The Capitals' management obviously faces a challenging decision, weighing the benefits of Rahul's external experience against Axar's internal familiarity, to steer the team towards IPL success.
