The mega auction for IPL 2025 will begin on 24 November 2024, and a total of 1584 players have registered their names in this auction. This auction promises an exciting lineup of capped and uncapped talent, with a total pool of 574 players, including 366 Indians and 208 overseas players. The auction will be held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
Each team is required to assemble a squad consisting of 18 to 25 players, with a cap of 8 overseas players. Players are also categorized into different base price brackets, which range from Rs. 30 lakh to Rs. 2 crore. However, there are 81 players listed at the highest bracket of Rs. 2 crore. The auction prominently features 12 marquee players, with the majority set at base prices of Rs. 2 crore.

Marquee players in the IPL auctions represent a distinguished group of elite cricketers who are guaranteed to draw intense interest and hefty bids from franchises. These players embody some of the finest talent in both international and Indian cricket, and in this auction, they command base prices of either Rs. 1.5 crore or Rs. 2 crore.
Mohammed Shami, a formidable 34-year-old Indian fast bowler, is celebrated for his exceptional precision, ability to swing the ball both ways, lethal yorkers, and versatility across all formats. He masterfully utilizes seam movement and swing to challenge batters, particularly excelling with the new ball during powerplay overs. Shami’s wrist position is a key asset, allowing him to produce late movement, both conventional and reverse swing, even on flat tracks.
As one of India's most dependable pacers in T20 cricket, Shami thrives in both death overs and new-ball situations. He debuted in the IPL in 2013 for KKR and has consistently performed since then. His career gained significant momentum during his time with Punjab Kings (formerly Kings XI Punjab) between 2019 and 2021.
In 2022, he joined Gujarat Titans, where he made a substantial impact over two successful seasons. Notably, in IPL 2023, he secured the Purple Cap for claiming the most wickets, playing a crucial role in guiding Gujarat Titans to the final.
The IPL 2025 mega auction will begin at 3:00 PM IST, which corresponds to 12:30 PM local time in Jeddah. However, there are two sets of marquee players, each set containing six of them. Mohammed Shami has been grouped into the second set with other five marquee players, namely Yuzvendra Chahal, Liam Livingstone, David Miller, KL Rahul, and Mohammad Siraj.
Bidding wars among franchises are expected for these players. As Shami is in the second set, it will start after the completion of the first set, which could take around 50 minutes. If the auction starts at 3:30 PM IST onwards, then it is expected that the second set will start around 4:20 to 4:30 PM. If Shami’s name comes last among those six, then it is expected the right-arm fast bowler will come to the auction table around 5 PM IST. Hence, between the expected period of 4:20 PM to 5 PM, Shami’s bidding can be started.
N.B.: The timeline of a player's arrival at the auction table is based on assumptions related to the IPL auction and the player's position in the shortlist. The aforementioned time can change as per auction dynamics.
