IPL 2025: MI vs GT Turning Point - Which Moment Changed Yesterday IPL Match at Wankhede?

IPL 2025: In a nail-biting encounter interrupted by rain twice, Gujarat Titans edged Mumbai Indians by three wickets via Duckworth Lewis-Stern Method at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium in match number 56 of Indian Premier League 2025 on Wednesday (May 7).

The game which started on Tuesday (May 6) was finished around 12:40 am the next day as drizzle and wet outfield stretched a low-scoring thriller past midnight and kept the audiences hooked for the non-stop drama.

IPL 2025 MI vs GT Turning Point - Which Moment Changed Yesterday IPL Match at Wankhede

Put in to bat first, Hardik Pandya-led Mumbai Indians - chasing their seventh straight win of the ongoing season - had a terrible start as openers Ryan Rickleton (2) and Rohit Sharma (7) were dismissed cheaply inside the powerplay. But a solid 71-run stand between Suryakumar Yadav and Will Jacks, who slammed his first fifty of the season - for the third wicket brought MI back into the game.

However, Yadav (35) - who is now the leading run-scorer in the ongoing tournament with 510 runs in 12 games - and Jacks (53) departed in quick succession to GT spinner R Sai Kishore and Rashid Khan respectively in a space of 6 deliveries, leaving the hosts in troubled waters.

Captain Pandya (1), young guns Tilak Varma (7) and Naman Dhir (7) too couldn't bail the team out in the middle overs. However, Corbin Bosche (27 off 22) and Deepak Chahar (8*) provided some finishing touches in the death overs, helping MI to post a respectable 155/8 in 20 overs. Rashid Khan (1/21) from his quota of four overs was the pick of the bowlers for the Titans but left-arm spinner Sai Kishore returned with a couple of wickets.

The run chase of 156 wasn't an easy one for the Titans as their in-form batter Sai Sudharshan was dismissed cheaply for 5 by Trent Boult in the powerplay. Sudharshan - the Tamil Nadu batter - thus failed to reclaim the Orange Cap from SKY as he fell short by just a solitary run - the talented left-handed batter has scored 509 runs in 11 games in this edition.

But captain Gill (43), Jos Buttler (30) and Sherfane Rutherford (28) kept their team in the hunt in the run chase but all hell broke loose for the Titans as rain interruptions and wickets of set batters falling in heaps did the damage. Jasprit Bumrah - one of the best bowlers in modern-day cricket - turned the tables in Mumbai's favour when he dismissed dangerous-looking Gill and Shahrukh Khan with his trademark yorkers in the final two overs of his spell.

MI vs GT IPL 2025 Turning Point Of Match

With 24 required from the last two overs, the match was evenly poised for a nail-biting finish as Rahul Tewatia and Gerald Coetzee held guard for the champions of the 2022 season but the rain gods once again opened up and covers were put on. GT were 5 runs below par score (DLS Method) at that stage.

The game resumed after losing another 40-45 odd minutes and the match officials signalled resumption at 12:30 am with GT requiring 15 runs off 6 balls, as per the revised target under DLS. Captain Hardik Pandya handed the ball to Deepak Chahar - hoping the right-arm pacer would defend the 14 runs. However, Tewatia and Coetzee had other ideas.

Tewatia hit Chahar for a boundary on the very first ball before taking a single. Coetzee then hammered a slot delivery over long-on for a maximum, bringing the equation down to six off three balls. On the fourth ball, Chahar gave a single to Coetzee but he over-stepped, awarding an extra run as GT needed 4 off three balls.

On the fourth delivery, Tewatia could only get a single and levelled the scores. Coetzee tried to finish the game on the penultimate delivery but the South African all-rounder was caught at deep square leg by Naman Dhir. The game tilted again as all three results (win, loss and Super Over) were possible as GT needed a single off the last legal delivery with Arshad Khan on strike.

GT batters had to go for a single at any cost, but a slight error in judgment from Hardik at mid-off cost MI dearly for a direct hit towards the non-striker's end would have resulted in Arshad's dismissal and the game would have gone into Super Over.

Eventually, it was the final over of the rain-truncated game which turned out to be the turning point of match number 56 in IPL 2025.
