IPL 2025: Mitchell Johnson Urges Foreign Players to Skip Amid Tensions — “Safety Matters More Than Pay Cheques”

IPL 2025: Former Aussie pace ace Mitchell Johnson has urged overseas cricketers to think twice before returning to India for the remainder of the IPL 2025, stressing that player safety should take precedence over lucrative contracts, in the wake of India-Pakistan border tensions. as per report on PTI.

In a strongly worded column for The West Australian, Johnson shared his firm stance on the matter, expressing concerns about the security situation following the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, which had led to the suspension of the world's premier T20 league on May 9.

IPL 2025 Mitchell Johnson Urges Foreign Players to Skip Amid Tensions Safety Matters More Than Pay Cheques

"Cricket might involve mega bucks these days but it is still just a game, and that has been brought sharply into focus after the Indian Premier League's hiatus this week," Johnson wrote. "If I had to make a call whether to head back to India and finish the tournament, it would be an easy decision. It's a no from me. Lives and safety are the most important thing, not pay cheques."

Although a ceasefire was announced the day after the IPL was put on hold, paving the way for its resumption from Saturday, Johnson maintained that the uncertainties surrounding the geopolitical climate should not be brushed aside for the sake of entertainment.

The BCCI, in its official announcement on Monday, confirmed that the league would resume after "extensive consultations" and government clearance, with the final now slated for June 3 - a week before the much-anticipated World Test Championship final at Lord's on June 11.

That scheduling crunch could spell trouble for players from Australia and South Africa, who face a tight turnaround for red-ball cricket's showpiece event. Johnson flagged this as a major concern, urging boards and players alike to factor in preparation time and player welfare.

"It's a personal decision. No one should be coerced or feel pressured into going back, even if the IPL and Pakistan Super League, which has also been halted, push hard for it. Both tournaments should just end now or consider moving, which then becomes a huge financial issue," he stated. "And let's not forget that some Australian and South African players will need to prepare for the upcoming World Test Championship final."

Despite the growing eagerness among franchises and fans to see their foreign stars return, Johnson highlighted the need for a reality check, acknowledging the emotional and psychological weight of playing under constant threat.

"Cricket is a source of pride and unity for fans. Despite the challenges posed by the current situation, the passion for the game remains unwavering. However, the reality is that the safety and well-being of players, fans, and everyone involved in these leagues must be prioritised," he asserted.

With tensions still simmering in the background, Johnson concluded with a sobering reminder: "While cricket can bridge divides and promote camaraderie, it is essential to consider the implications of playing in such a tense security environment... we must not forget the bigger picture in all this."

As the IPL prepares to roar back into action this weekend, Johnson's cautionary words echo louder than ever - spotlighting the delicate balance between passion for the game and the paramount importance of human life.
